Brand new FR-S...Brand new problems
Hi, I am a new member to this site and am sending a shout out to those out there who own a FR-S. I took my brand new Firestorm Scion on a road trip from Seattle to Reno when one of the computers quit "communicating" with another one and it tripped the check engine and traction control lights. I took it to the Reno dealer who diaganosed the problem and said that one computer thought the timing was off, and it caused it to run in "safe" mode, and very crappy I might add, the timing wasnt off though, I was assured. They gave me the sad news that the part was back ordered and there wasnt one available in the nation so no ECD of its arrival! In a last ditch effort, they disconnected the battery and it reset the codes and was driving back to normal and I was given the all clear to drive it back to Seattle. They said I was probably the first FR-S to have this problem (lucky me) and the lights would most likely come on again in about 20 miles. They actually stayed off for about 400 miles but when I returned home I drove it directly to the dealer and there it sits. First I was told it would be weeks and weeks and weeks before the part would be available but then was updated that there would be one available on 9/20. I have only owned the car for 3 weeks!
![]() Has anyone had this problem or heard anything about this? I am just curious if I am unique or if it is a common issue. Any comments welcome!

Pretty common problem, nothing to do with the "ecu's" though. Look into idle problem. Mine actually caused catastrophic engine failure and resulted in having to get a whole new car. Mines the most extreme case though, but many are having the same problem. It is related to the vvti system.

I have about 3800 miles now too and no issues. In fact, my car has had 0 issues at all (I don't really consider the Chirp to be an issue) other than the manufacturer defect in my trunk (see other thread).

Real quick, is this a problem with a certain VIN number range or something? Because I just dropped a turbo and if this occurs in my car with no warranty, I could be super screwed.
I am at 2000 miles though, seems like most are <1000. Think I'm good?
