![]() I don't know what to do I know that when I switched up to a flowmaster on my old GTI, I got a higher-pitched sound than was anticipated, but that was such a different engine. I'm thinking a chambered muffler versus a packed muffler might be a part of the equation, but I can only really try it once before I've wasted money XD |

I'm looking for the stock sound my 2012 TC had. Throaty good idle and great sound when on it.

As far as I know:
Aftermarket commonly used inline mufflers is a low pass filter, which absorb only high freq sound, so it's natural they have those "deep" tone, that's what these kind of exhausts can only get, rather than what vendors "tuned up". For more higher pitch, i.e. low band silencing, you need one or more large expansion camber, like a stock one, or large branch out helmholtz resonator. Tune up their dimensions/containment can eventually get you the proper pitch. For some reason, we can seldom seen stock style exhausts in aftermarket, I don't know why either. Maybe it's owner's favor that they seem can't flow that "freely" and looks not so "performance". But IMO, keep the upstream pipes unchanged, exhaust valves can feel NOTHING about what muffler is in use at all.

Large expansion chamber, meaning like a long and thin muffler, or, long and wide muffler? I was thinking about replacing the stock resonator with a long and thin Magnaflow, and then doing Nameless's dual-exit track pipe (Whenever that becomes available).

Basically, I think the stock maze muffler is the most effective one in low tone cancelling, then a see-through inline expansion camber(stock mid resonator). All see-through "glasspack" are essentially for high pitch cancelling, and can't do too much about the low tone. The key here for low pitch is SLOWDOWN & SMOOTH OUT, no direct shoot out, which is contrary to our instinct for "high flow" or "performance". The long thin Magnaflow is a glass pack, surely will let more low tone pass through than the stock one. the Nameless muffler, I don't know what's in it

Ah, I see
![]() Hmmm... How do we feel about Magnaflow 3-chamber mufflers? They can be had long and thin, and have no packing, just chambers and some hole-y internal pipes. |

That looks like a nice choice if you do care about the low pitch noise and it has some real weight reduction from the stock one. But I've never heard one, you may hear it by yourself before a decision. IMO tail muffler can do little about HP, so weight and tone are the major factors we choose from^__^

short and wide expansion chamber will increase the pitch... kinda hard to explain but think of how a lotus sounds compared to a celica or mr2. alot of that sound difference in the total length of exhaust piping, in addition to the shape and flow capability. another reason ferrarri's and lambos sound the way they do compared to maserati or a viper. you can do alot with pressure change and material...it's alot of work tho. look at how complicated the LFA exhaust is compared to some other v10's and you'll see what i mean. or check out a few MR car exhausts.

Unfortunately, I'm not finding any that have the inlet/outlet configuration that's needed for these cars, but I'm going to keep up the search. Listening to clips, the Greddy SP Elite seems closest to the sound I'm searching for, so I'm curious what it looks like in that case. If it's a multiple chamber design, that seals the deal for me. |
