As to the passing left lane. Yes, running at 75 mph is 10 mph above the speed limit. However, if by running at 75 mph at the left lane and blocking all the traffic behind you, I would say you are running slow. IMHO when you pass on the left, make it snappy. Speed up, pass from the left, once clear, move right and move along. Simple as that. 75 mph may be fast to you, but that may not be fast for other people. No need to hug the left lane just because you think that is fast enough for you.
Yea, if I have room to move over I will let people pass. But I'm not gonna squeeze into a traffic line in the middle lane and go 60 just because someone behind me thinks 75 is not fast enough. If I am actively passing people in the left lane, I have a right to be there and I'm not gonna let someone else dictate the speed at which I have to pass traffic.

And that is the key point that you raised here. Of course if there are cars in the middle lane, doing 60-70 mph nicely and no *suitable* room for you to get in, you can keep going until you find the spot to merge right.

What I have seen that many people think they are still actively passing people on the left lane when there is at least a car or two car lengths in the middle lane, but there are a tail of cars waiting behind them. They refused to merge right, thinking they have the right to be at the left lane but in fact blocking the whole highway. Eventually they just got lazy to shift lane to the right and stay on the left, whether there was traffic or not. But that is another problem. I digress.

As I said before, if you are going to overtake someone, make it snappy and smooth without disturbing the flow. If you do not think you can do it quickly and efficiently, stay in the middle lane until it is clear for you to do it safely.

Yea I think the stretch of 101 that runs through the peninsula is prime 70mph tailgating zone. It's scary, but then you adapt and drive like everyone else, squeezing through tight spots when you can right behind the next person's bumper.

On the flip side of what you said ... If you are passing folk at a decent rate, just because some tool is sniffin' out your backside doesn't mean you gotta get outta his way exactly the moment he wants you too. Who the hell made him king of the road and ordained that all traffic in front must move over to make way.

I'm surprised nobody has called this one yet, especially since this has turned into a rant thread...

CELL PHONES.

Being a motorcyclist, I am completely dumbfounded by how much stupidity I see on a daily basis. Cell phones only complicate things. We're all guilty of taking calls or making calls while driving, but please keep your distractions as brief as possible. Then there's texting if you really enjoy tempting fate. A car is a weapon, swallow your f'n pride and pay attention.

AMEN!

I can't stand when people don't use their blinkers. Or when people roll through stop signs...is that 1-2 seconds you save really going to matter?

I also hate the people that drive the speed limit, until you go to pass them, then all of a sudden they want to do 80mph

No one. On the flip side, no one says that just because you are passing other cars, you can take as much time as you please to pass. If there are cars behind you already, move faster and move to the right to let them pass. There is no need to block people just so that you can pass other cars. No one make him king of the road, and neither are you.

We should give everyone Subaru paint so they learn to avoid tailgating.

I doubt we're disagreeing (much). There's a continuum here. Clearly if you are lazily passing cars on the right and you are holding someone up, move over. At the other end of the spectrum, If you are going 15 mph faster than the cars in the right lane, there is no need to move over just because some fool in a minivan wants to go 85 for 25 yards until he's tailgating the next guy in the left lane.

We might disagree on the fuzzier cases in the middle a bit, but I bet we pretty much agree on the cases on either end of the spectrum :happy0180:

the one thing that bothers me the most is people who play games.

going 65 in the fast lane and wont get over so when i try to pass they speed up then slow down next to a car. it always varies but games like that are so stupid.

I have a live and let live type attitude. dont bother me for how i want to drive and i could give a rats ass what you want to do. want to drive 100 be my guest... hopefully you will take the heat off me doing 80

ps... in some states its always and a lot of highways have it posted that the left lane is for passing only... so the speed you are going dont matter.... of course if you are talking in the city with traffic thats a different story.
