First Spy Pics of Scion FR-S / Toyota FT-86 Production Test Mule! (Updated 5/17)

I hope Toyota dont drop the ball on this and revert to recent form of producing uninspiring cars.

Although this is a test mule, it doesnt mean that its not almost production shape. The worrying thing is that this mule could easily be the production shell whereas the others we saw were obviously not. As ever we just have to wait.

This is the first point since following the car im starting to think it may not deliver.

For all those talking about concepts not making it to the showroom with the same looks, sure some dont, but some also do. The Civic Type R was mostly unchanged from the concept shown at Geneva (i think) to what was released.

There is probably a extra masking sheet under camo on hood and similar situation on front fascia. You are right with "hood line should be similar to Mk2", I think including central "stamped" (English word? sorry if wrong) section which lines continues on roof.

Front grille is wrong OR JPN. Also lights looks differently.

From what I can see it does look a bit bland.
I will wait untill they offically show off the production verson.
I would like a nicer looking exterior but that can be modified if it turns out pretty bland. Would just have to save up extra to do it.

to be honest im getting scared, but all hope is not lost maybe toyota will do like honda did back with the 94-01 integra that US got one version and the rest of the world got another! lets wait and see.

ohh and it sucks to be you guys that no matter what toyoya brings out, are ok with it. and defend toyota.

I may live in a town that is stereotyped for its lift kitted trucks, or Cadillacs with license plates that read "RIDN26S" (no joke), but I think 17s would be a wonderful size. That's what I have on my SUV and they're certainly big enough for that vehicle so I can't see why I'd need anything bigger here. But then again tires are a fairly personal decision as evidenced by that license plate.

As to the car itself all I can say is nothing appears hideously wrong or unexpected from these pictures, so let's wait and see what it looks like without camo. And like another poster previously said, I'll just save a little more if the final product needs a little sprucing up.

Spy photos of a prototype are released, and you all can't stop talking about the single aspect of the car that is most often changed out with aftermarket parts?

Can you please take your wheel discussion elsewhere?



Making a prototype with entirely new body panels is nothing like simply swapping out wheels. You act like wheels are welded on to the car and whatever is on the prototype will be in production. Seriously?

Seems to me the wheels are the least important part of a car that Toyota/Subaru probably glanced over to their trash bin and decided "Hey those are there, let's just grab those and toss them on for a quick ride in the mule"

QFT, I agree throw the hammer immediately like the Subaru crowd did when they rfeleased the 20o8 wrx with no fender flares and made it look lke a corolla.

True

The car has more issues than the what wheels and spoiler its rocking. The main part is it doesn't have the aggressive arches, and the roof line is high. Along with hideous taillights.

Its just lost too many of its styling cues from the first two Toyota Concepts and the Scion Concept.

Aggressive arches on a car that will be around 180-200hp NA? What other car priced around $23-25k and has 180-200hp comes with aggressive arches and other body panels like the 5axis FR-S concept? Did you really think the production care would look like that?

The height of the car is still under 50in.

Correction, you mean you hope this is the Subaru model.

What indications do you have that this is a Subaru? One could argue this is a Toyota based on the DAU0684 plate.

Of course i have no evidence but its so far detached from the concepts we've seen from Toyota and Scion. Where as its simple lines imho look closer to that of the subaru 'see through' concept.

We've always known that the Toyota and Subaru cars were being developed side by side by the same people so the numberplate means jack.

Either A) Toyota have wussed out on the styling of the concepts for the production car... or B) This is the Subaru car with more subtle styling which would look more like the current Subaru range.

The fact that the Yaris and the Prius now have FT86 concept style front bumpers suggests to me that the concept cars are carrying the nose of the future Toyota range... which we dont see here on this car.
