I won't know until I take the head unit out this weekend. I'll probably just snip the gray wire and bring the entire harness/gray wire with me to a local electronics store/Radio Shack to match the connector correctly. Then it's just a matter of getting two more connectors, crimp the wires to the harness, attach a grounding eyelet on the gray wire, and attach it to a screw on the back of the head unit. Will do the other hack on the other harness to put a switch on the speed snsor wire so I can bypass the "oh no you don't" nanny while the vehicle is moving, but still put it back on when I need it for accurate navigation.

Unless someone does it before me, I'll put part numbers for the connectors up once I identify and source them.

Mr. SVXdc has the correct pins now, the test kit he sent worked perfectly. Two pins with a RCA jack, plug and play.

He's been quiet for the past few days, probably work related. I'm sure he'll have the kit up soon. He does read this forum.

I realize that, but I've reached out to him and as you said, he's been quiet. If we can identify the necessary connectors, everyone can just run to their local electronics store for the parts to make this work.

I already have an RCA to Molex harness that I had from the Eclipse camera kit. The Molex isn't the correct interface, nor are the pin connectors the right size for the BRZ's head unit, so I'm snipping the harness off of it and getting the correct sized connectors to insert into the BRZ's 16-pin harness.

To that end, I just need the part #'s for the correct Molex pin connectors and it's all set.

FINAL EDIT: svxdc confirms that these are not the correct parts. Please see his post below to order directly from him.

OK, I think I found the parts. Not Molex as I originally thought, but perhaps Tyco instead, assuming this is the same connector that Nissan is using for its SWC/SAT functionality.

The harness plug would be http://www.onlinecomponents.com/te-c...tml?p=10209836

The individual contact receptacle would be http://www.onlinecomponents.com/te-c...tml?p=10204825

Again, this is just my best educated guess. I have not confirmed these parts, but this is what is definitely used on Nissans and I know Subaru shares some of their gear.

The receptacles are all you need if you're reusing the existing harness. I'm sure this bad boy uses a special crimping tool, so unless you have one of those handy, you're going to be ghetto engineering it with some other tool, or soldering it directly. Also, I wouldn't advise buying from the site I listed as they have a minimum purchase requirement that far exceeds the cost of these parts, but that's where I happened to find them and if you have a local electronics supplier, perhaps you could check these parts out there and compare to your stock harness.

EDIT: Found em at mouser.com too: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/...2bie8nLUVt8%3d and http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/...x8Qbn75dea8%3d

Again, proceed at your own risk - I have not tried these parts yet. Until I can confirm these, you're on your own.

Sounds good - hopefully it looks like this http://www.tycoelectronics.com/comme...ocLang=English or http://www.onlinecomponents.com/view...source=1089675

What you've all been waiting for...

Quote:
That is available now. Contact me by e-mail for details (see my homepage, then click on the link for harnesses). Price will be much less than $300 (but does not include a camera).

If you want to try installing a Subaru OEM camera, I can add another short wire for the +6V camera power supply.

Also coming soon, two plug-and-play versions (prices TBD):
.
The right one is for those who don't want to bypass the parking brake function -- it passes through that signal from the car to the HU.

I should have an ETA by the end of next week (probably available 2 weeks after that).

Update: all 3 variations are now available. See this page.
All of those should work with the BeSpoke HU too. I'd like to find an owner to answer some questions and then test one.

Those are not the same as the factory 16-pin harness plug and its pins. The pins you found are like the ones I use on my 8-pin rear camera harness (for other/older Subaru models). Those are the pins that 'Flat Black VW' extracted and tried to cram into his BRZ's factory 16-pin harness plug (with poor results).

This is absolutely correct. The proper hand tool runs $800 or more.

If you don't shape the crimps exactly right, the pin likely will not lock into the plastic shell, and you won't be able to close the secondary retention latch flush (which, in turn, may prevent you from being able to plug the connector into the HU's socket). A pair of needle-nosed piers or a generic crimp tool simply won't cut it.

If you want plain wires with pins (to roll your own custom cable), let's see if sparks can identify the correct parts from Subaru's harness repair kit. I have a hunch those won't be cheap, but they will save you a lot of grief.

Thanks svxdc! Saves me the trip to the parts store and trying to borrow a TE hand tool!

For those that are still looking to source the exact pin receptacles, are you able to share the part number that you used?

I'll be ordering your non plug n play kit now. Thanks again.

I ended up mounting a BOYO VTL425 ultra slim license plate camera. It doesn't have the distance grid lines so it'll work better with the BRZ head unit. It also doesn't cover up any part of the license plate, nor does it look like an eyesore since it blends right into the top.

I routed the wire up through the passenger side license plate light opening, then into one of the center bolt holes. I used the included grommet to seal it and it's a great fit. Yes, the trunk trim above the plate is now held down by 4 bolts and a snap rather than 5 and a snap, but it's not going anywhere.

The lead to the head unit is routed through the trunk to body grommet/sleeve, then along the driverside paneling, under the door sill plate, and to the fusebox/headunit.

There's a toggle switch on the headunit side of the lead that lets you reverse (mirror) the image if you prefer either way.

I tested it out just connecting the wires directly and it looks good, but for a more permanent solution, I'll need to get the proper pin receptacles to go into the stock harness. Pictures once everything is in place.

not sure why you say "with poor results". My camera works perfectly. The only place I had an issue was where I grabbed my power for the camera but that had nothing to do with the pins. I have since moved the power and now it works great. The pins were a bit different than what was supposed to fit but I easily made them work with zero issues.

I do recommend people to buy the proper kit from you because what is the point of buying the wrong pins when the correct ones are available, but at the time of me doing this the correct pins were not available so I used what I had.

BTW, the aux input is really A/V. The factory 28-pin harness has vacant pins for the video portion of the aux input. The same RCA cable and pins that fit the 16-pin plug will work on the 28-pin plug too.
