And it's not a top engine rebuild, it involves the Oil Control Valves (for the VVT), the Exhaust Cam Sprocket and the ECM. In some cases just the OCV's need to be replaced, in others only the Cam sprockets, and in a few, all of the parts need to be replaced.

It can affect Impreza's with the FB20 and all models with the FA20.
The TSB only applies if you have had a CEL.
I could swear I just read one of Dave's replies yesterday where he said he's seeing symptoms...which would lead one to believe the CEL may happen any time for him.

Yeah I would have to agree, it's not a serious rebuild IMO, now that I've seen the repair in progress. They aren't going as deep into the engine as I had imagined. I posted a pic today, may have my car back tomorrow.

They dealt with a few issues like this in other Toyotas, I wanna say it was the Sienna and maybe the Tacoma(?) when I worked in the parts dept. of a Toyota dealer. We used to have a lot of cam sprockets and sometimes camshafts and other assorted timing components on the recall/warranty shelf constantly. Of course this is a Subaru motor, but just know that it's not an uncommon problem for vehicles in general. Hang in there guys and gals! You know that Subaru and Toyota won't leave you hanging. It's a complicated engine, having Dual-AVCS means four of these thingies instead of plain old fixed metal gears:
