Aside from tires, it seems like a good idea to buy steel wheels to put them on. Anyone know some really cheap, decent steel wheels to do this with?

Killer deal. I paid for them Monday afternoon and they were on my Porch Tuesday afternoon. They are as perfect as new tires could be. $412 shipped was hard to beat when looking at other options online.

Now I just need to sell my 16" Winterforce tires from my Civic.

Granted this is customer survey data, not test data, but this comparison agrees more with me than it does with you. At the very least your "much worse" claim should be revised:

Edit: This is against the tire that took third in the test noted above. The Continental Extreme Winter Contact vs. Altimax comparison shows basically the same results.

As someone who has driven aggressively on that tread pattern vs a moderate snow tire, I can assure you there is a difference. Tread squirm matters in both cornering and braking.
