Lean burn is better for fuel economy because recirculated exhaust slows down combustion much more than fresh air does, but lean burn causes a major NOx problem.
EGR isn't only used at part throttle, they can use more EGR at higher loads specifically to reduce combustion temperatures. They do have to balance the reduced combustion inefficiencies with the improvement in throttle efficiency but it means they can run leaner rich mixtures and higher compression ratios which is also better for part throttle operation, where the biggest efficiency losses occur.

Edit: This is all theoretical.

I'll bet they are considering cooling ERG due to the way this motor knocks down low,

there was a FRs on the Dyno the otherday and for the start of the 3rd gear pull (fourth was gonna take a week) @ around 1800, the motor was sounding like it was gonna come apart.

+1, I'm wondering whether I should try to get a late 2013 next year or just wait a few months til the '14 comes out mid-season...

These TGV's sound a lot like the flaps in Mazda3/Speed3 intake manifolds, which more or less act like tiny little "chokes" in the intake manifold. They are really only there for cold start emissions. We take them out for better flow. The NA guys don't see a huge difference but it really helps the Speed3's, much like it seems to for the WRX's. Chock that one up as a downgrade. It seems to me, that if they really did fix the FT86 torque dip of doom, they remodeled the intake manifold with a few tweaks, and tossed in the TGV's as well, but dumbed it down in the marketing literature so it would be more easily understood.

Agree with the others that indicated the TGVs are actaully a downgrade. I removed TGVs from my STi and it made a noticeable power difference. They are for emissions and emissions only. After cold start up they just impede air flow. I know this is apples to oranges comparison (Forced induction EJ257 vs Direct Injection FA20) but conceptually the TGVs would be doing teh same thing even on an NA engine. I think they are just going to impede airflow like they did on the EJ motors.

Real useful post, now hundreds of ppl are going to needlessly look at this thread expecting news...

FYI, as a newbie you need to know that ANY news in that regard would be immediately posted, ppl would be tripping all over each other to be first with it lol - so bumps like this are just an irritant.

I appreciate his bump as I would not have found this thread. Now I can be glad that I didn't wait for the 2014. And you also never know how many other forums this guy frequents. Try not be so quick to try to teach the "newbies" a lesson master yoda.
