I really like Mobil 1, but I seem to recall some people saying that Mobil 1 in subaru engines is a no no. Can anyone provide any input?

I've always heard the same thing. Just never any real reason to it. People just always kinda seem to say it to me.

You e heard that before because a WRX motor will eat the factory recommended weight of Mobile 1 (5w-30). That oil cant handle heat well at all and shears very badly which wont protect the motor. Now, for most n/a subaru motors you could use wolfs head oil or the blood of jesus and it wouldnt matter.

Not sure what oil im going to be using on the FRS, maybe german castrol but really not sure yet.

I've been using the Toyota 0W-20 as it supposedly is engineered pretty well.

I'll check the invoice after work.

It was $7.69 per quart at my Subaru dealership.

I paid $45 for the entire package so it's much less at mine per quart. Weird if it varies that much from dealer to dealer.

judging by Perrin's post recently how the engine runs hotter than usual, i wouldn't see anything wrong with running a 0w30 oil, especially if you will be tracking it. More common to find 0w30 too. I think 0w20 is really for fuel economy...

Personally plan on running 0w40 mobil 1, as its closer to a 0w30 and made my old wrx purrrr.

To keep the warranty it is advisable to use the viscosity listed in the manual
and with the correct certification like API SN/SM etc.
some boutique oil is not certified..
follow OCI of the manufactuer.

That way incase you spun a rod bearing or have an oil related warranty claim, you can show you used the proper oil.

Just did my oil change and i have to say this was the easiet oil change i've ever done and probably the least messiest(if thats a word lol). I used penzoil platinum and with stock subaru filter and my car runs and sounds much better. Shift is alot better and less clunky but i think im going to change my gear oil as well to see if it will be a little smoother

The short answer to your question is 0W-20 weight oil is distributed principally in North America in response to the demands of the United States' automobile industry, which must meet the requirements of the U.S. "CAFE" (corporate average fuel economy) law or pay graduating penalties for failing to do so. The lower viscosity of 0W-20 weight oil saves fuel principally on start-up at lower temperatures, and it performs well in a relatively low rpm, light-load operating environment. Urban environments, in other words. When used in millions of automobiles, it results in a significant fleet-wide fuel savings. Moreover, to the extent that an automobile manufacturer's fleet average betters that required by U.S. law, a manufacturer can earn and sell the energy credits to other manufacturers, and Honda does this. Honda's U.S. energy credits are worth literally tens of millions of dollars each year. Last year, for example, Honda earned over $900 million from CAFE energy credit sales. Toyota Motor Company earned near three trillion US$. In the absence of those financial incentives, however, the potential fuel savings for individual vehicle owners are simply less important. And then there's the fact that 5W-30 and 10W-30 oils provide a greater margin of viscosity film-strength in a higher rpm, higher-temperature environment, which is what you are much more likely to experience in Australia.

That was the best short answer i could find regarding this topic. I was planning on running a 0-20 or 0-30 in winter, and going to a 5-30 for summer.
