A different kind of exhaust question...
I've often searched the internet for an answer to this question, but never really found an answer.
To me, it seems like whenever someone talks about exhaust sound/tone, they're always trying to make their exhaust throaty and deep. Personally though, I've never really liked the wall-of-bass kind of tone. I always preferred a shallow howl to a deep roar (Think original 350Z). I guess the question is, if one takes performance out of the equation, how can an exhaust be "tuned" for pitch? I imagine smaller diameter pipes will produce a higher pitch, but are obviously more restrictive. I was thinking of perhaps running two smaller diameter mufflers, in order to at least maintain the cross-sectional diameter of the primary piping. That way, flow isn't compromised, and the smaller pipes might bring about a higher pitched resonance. Any ideas? |

back when I had my 370Z they were companies that would havee exhaust systems with different size resonators for louder applications etc.
I'd say it's all about the mufflers you use and resonators, maybe the diamatere of tube changes a bit but this sounds like a lot of money to be testing out til you get the right sound. |

![]() I could just give something a try, but if it doesn't sound the way I intended, I'm humped >.< Now I'm thinking about it, the Nameless setup DOES use very small diameter plumbing for it's two outlets, but it still has a bit more "boom" than I really want. |

Jason @ Nameless has posted quite a bit about tuning exhausts for tone. Perhaps he can chime in.

Yeah i want something a little more exotic sounding personally but thats hard to do with a flat 4.
Still the nameless system is my favorite so far and sounds dam good. In my dreams this car would have come with a flat six. For anyone thats ever heard the porsche flat 6s with aftermarket exausts....mother of god |

Thinking more about it, intuitively it seems the Nameless exhaust would be the highest pitch and less resonating design we've seen so far. You could always just drive the Z car

Most Porsche flat 6s I hear at the track are obnoxiously loud and annoying, in my opinion of course. |

Great example
Especially with the valve thingy disconnected ![]() On a semi-related note, I don't know if I was hallucinating, but did I see something in an exhaust post here about a lot of flow being trapped in the mid-pipe? Maybe keep the stock muffler, and just switch to a higher-flowing mid-pipe? |
