I think it is needed only for track cars. Street only cars would be nice to have it but not really needed.

That looks like the oil cooler on the WRX/STI which Perrin talks about in his thread. I did find some pics of the new Legacy 2.0 DIT engine and it does not look it uses one, at least not as part of the oil filter mount.

I am somewhat surprised at the amount of people tracking the cars, which is a ton, without anyone mentioning oil temp or oil pressures. In fact I don't think I've seen anyone with a gauge installed in the car...

Am installing the Greddy one.

Oil cooler is necessary, at least over here in Singapore as the weather is pretty hot, avg oil temp. street driving can be 98C or thereabouts. Track oil temp. will reach 120C easily without oil cooler.

Some comments on the Greddy one. They have stopped using Earl's fittings and hoses in their kit, or at least they dont look like Earl's. What is required is the sandwich adaptor as well as the thermostat sandwich plate for the cooler hose and sensors.

Seeing that Greddy now sells the additional sandwich plate due to the special construction of the oil filter, I would have preferred to buy my own Setrab cooler core and Earl's fittings and hoses.

But whats good from Greddy (or typical JDM brands) is that the kit is bolt-on with ready brackets and clear instructions, which is very nice.

Cheers

The HKS Oil Cooler kit is already in stock ready to go (see below). Good investment for anyone tracking their car or going forced induction. Works with front mount and has a thermostat so doesnt send oil to the cooler until up to temp.
Cheers

can anyone point me to the sandwich plate that works with these cars? I don't mind building my own kit and fabbing brackets, but I'm not excited about trial and error to find the right tstat sandwich plate...

You are going to need an adapter that elevates the plate over the lip where the filter sits.

Check the Greddy\GREX for the special spacer sandwich for GT86\BRZ

I recall them presenting it and saying that it's kinda special - thicker than previous subarus

they definitely have what you need, pic attached

this is going to sound a little funny, but with the HKS system and the lines being as long as they are... would be need to put in any extra oil into our engines? i mean i'm not saying that adding the line and core would suddenly suck up a liter of oil, but would the oil that's running to the cooler through approx 4m of line be lowering the oil level that normally stays within the engine?
