The next time you complain about ICBC, try comparing it to Ontario. Manitoba also has government controlled auto insurance and they have some the lowest rates in Canada. |

Just a comment on Desjardins... my financee has insurance through them and they had been charging her extra for 2 years for an "accident" that was on her file that never happened. Admittedly she should have looked at her statements more carefully, as it was listed in her yearly reports, but she never bothered to look that closely.
When we found it, it was because she had a legitimate accident - they threatened to cancel her policy because now she had "two" accidents. I was on the phone every day with these people. They wanted me to aquire her driving record from GGI, the organization that keeps driving records in Ontario. This is where Insurance Companies go to get peoples history before they insure them, it is not something that the consumer should have to do, but they are convinced that I must get the report. So anyways, I get the report about a month later from CGI, it shows ZERO accidents beforehand. So I call Desjardins again for the seventeenth time, telling them I have the report they wanted me to get, and there is nothing on her record. They proceed to tell me that me having the report is not adequate, and that they have to get it themselves! Are you f***ing kidding me. So I call several times, finally they have received her record, and low and behold, they were wrong. So they try to blame it on my fiancee "Well she must have said that she had an accident when she registered with us, so that's why it's not on her driver's history". Yeah prove it you f***ing scumbags. Long story short, they 'graciously' remove the accident that never happened, they refuse to compensate her on her rates that she would have been overpaying for because "that's not how this works". Moral of the story and the TL,DR: Stay the f away from Desjardins insurance, and if you choose not to, then be very careful to read your statements, and HOPE that you don't ever need any customer service from them |

If you're under the age of 25 then insurance will be sustancially higher.
I believe it is mandatory you get full coverage when you buy a brand new vehicle. |

Just to clarify, the reduced rates from TD for grads are from TD Meloche monnex which I believe is a separate company.
I was quoted $1625/year from them, which is pretty good for Markham. Have a look into them, there are lots of places that offer reduced rates through them (universities, professional associations, where you work). |

Used these guys before, they were alright.
Also used RBC, but when I moved into a new riding in Toronto (from Davenport to York South Weston) they jacked my rates through the roof - they justified it by saying this riding has the highest car issues in the whole GTA. Ended up switching, and getting a deal through Coseco because of my employer at the time. Feel some of the best advice to give a kid these days: Get your license as soon as you are 16 and get insured as soon as possible. Especially if you never drive. If you wait until you need or want a car later in life you are going to get killed on rates. |

Totally agree with rossman, I got insured as a second driver since I am 16, and now I am almost 30, stick with the same company ever since that time. My quote was 2500/year since it is a new car, my S2000 before was only 1800/yr, the lowest went down to 1500/year.
