Exclamation Are BRZ & FRS Camshaft Timing Sprockets Interchangeable

I have my 2016 FRS in the shop p0018. The Technician is telling me that the BRZ & FRS camshaft timing sprockets are not interchangeable. Of course the toyota part would cost more $$.

I feel like he is trying to swindle me- I thought these cars had the exact same engines. I was told "BRZ sprockets have teeth on the outside and the scion FRS sprockets have teeth on the inside"

Can anyone confirm?

Update: I told the tech they should be the same as they were assembled in the same factory with identical engines. He changed his explanation slightly

He replied: The plate on the front end of the cam sprocket is slightly different. The Subaru BRZ ones have a plate on the outer & the FRS has a plate on the inner"

This is a difference between model years most likely, absolutely not a difference between Subaru and Toyota/scion

They are claiming they ordered 2016 BRZ parts. So it would be the same model year, I am not sure how to reply. Is there anyway I can prove that the parts are identical for 2016 across platforms?

You can search the parts on Subaru’s website and it shows parts compatibility between their models. The difference is in the model years. The 13-16 use different style cam reluctor plate then 17+. If it’s the same model year it doesn’t matter if it’s FRS/BRZ and if they don’t know that you should find a different mechanic.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even though they were built in 2016, they’re considered 2017 BRZs. I have the first-gen pre-facelift. I bought my car in 2015, but it was sold as a 2016.”

I asked to speak directly to the tech and stated I would happily provide part numbers that are correct. They mysteriously did not want them they just said they would do the job at the original quoted price. FISHY!

They are Subaru engines, built on a Subaru engine manufacturing line in a Subaru factory in Gunma.
The Toyotas come from the same place though.
If the Tech is telling you someone put an LS in it while your back was turned that would be kind of cool.

Yes, I told the tech that. Haha handling might not be so great but I could be on board!
