Locked up engine
Anybody ever have an engine lock up but not blow up? On the front stretch at Summit Point, with no warning, I had a big noise and then no power. No smoke. No oil or coolant leaks. I coasted off the track. In the paddock, the engine could not be turned even with a big a$$ breaker bar.
I'm guessing part of the noise was 4th gear shearing off teeth. I'm going back up on Friday to pick her up and start the post-mortem. |

Damn, can’t really think of much that would cause that kind of failure and not show its insides on the outsides. Maybe something timing chain related? Hopefully it’s a transmission.

Thanks guys. If it's a weird problem, it will happen to me.
The engine has Manley rods so possibly something could seize and not expel the guts. My wife is urging me to sell the car "as is" and get a Gen 2. Last edited by blsfrs; 04-15-2024 at 10:01 AM. |

Bummer. Wasn’t this a built engine? Wonder what caused the rapid unassemble? It’s in enough pieces it’d be too hard to tell which was chicken/egg. Are the big ends of the rods tight?

Among the chunks of shredded metal, we found bits of piston rings and a couple of "c" clips that I assume were wrist pin retainers. The big end of the rods and crank shaft look undamaged. I was hoping to salvage some of the parts for resale but I think the long block is headed to the scrap yard. On the bright side, the transmission and clutch are ok and I should have my FA24 in a couple of weeks. |

Is it worthwhile to salvage any of the engine parts for resale at a bargain price? A little extra lunch money would be nice.
It is/was a comp engine. The heads were built by Element Tuning with Ferrea big valve components. The spring kit sells for over $900 and valves range from $60-$70 each. I realize the valves in #2 are probably/maybe/most likely toast but the springs and the rest of the valves (and bank 1 head) should be fine. I don't know if anything in the bottom end is worth anything. When pulling the heads off, should I try and keep the rockers and shims matched? |
