What it looks like for me.
I might have found a way to defeat them just now. Switching phone to landscape mode with ads up made them disappear without messing up the page I selected. |

This could be "fake news" but the site suddenly seems 300% faster than it has been in months.

This is true for me too. At least for the moment.

It's somewhat on and off.
Early European hours (about 2AM eastern US time) it is acceptably fast and works almost 100% of the time. By the time US users log in, the hamsters get overwhelmed and everything goes to crap. It does seem a little better now, but was useless a few hours ago, so.. |

I think about 20% of the time, it times out on me. It is worse on mobile device. Anymore I am usually on my Ipad and it's super annoying.
The ads honestly don't really bother me that much, even when I have to zoom to click out of them.

The ads didn't really bother me until the popup window when entering a thread. The fact that I had to find an press the little x to see the page was what caused me to start blocking the ads.

It was great for a few hours. I'm grumpy that I let myself get excited about it.

Anti-ad blocking measures that system administrators take will be the eventual downfall of the commercial internet.

I figured the connection issues were just in my end with my old Windows 7 computer here, lol. Every other page on the site needs reloaded 2-3 times usually. As far as ads, with a few ad blockers, I don't see anything here.
The way I see it, there are two main problems: Centralized internet is a thing. Back in the day, NASIOC for the Subaru crowd was huge. I think it was in the top 10 forums/message boards on the entire internet back around 2005-2010. Now it's rather dead. People moved on from specific message boards for cars or brands to sites like Facebook, Reddit, etc. If you kinda think about it, Reddit and Facebook came about around 2004/2005 and started taking off in 2007+. That's about when the shift away from forums / message boards started. A lot of the internet is centralized with Google accounts for access many places now. The mid and late 2000's were a really good internet time. It's probably when the internet 'peaked' in a nostalgic way. I kinda like the old school vibe message boards give, which is why I stick around mostly. As far as the first gen and even 2nd gen twins, as cars grow and get older with new generations, the following changes. Back in the day with the Imprezas/WRX, the old 90's GC chassis and even GD had a hardcore group as followers/owners. As the third and fourth generation came out and car culture changed a bit (~2015+), people didn't want to dive into the technical aspects of the car, suspension, tuning, etc. You didn't have as many passionate owners wanting to know everything about a car, but people just wanting a question answered on how to many make fit or something. I think you see that playing out here. We're becoming more of the die-hards, the the older GC/GD Impreza owners did. People who literally have membership journals for our cars, buy and sell here, want to update and ask each other track/autocross specific questions. Maybe the first generation isn't the absolute best anymore, but a lot of us are still passionate about it. The platform isn't new anymore. We're not all sitting here trying to figure out if intakes work, what exhaust diameter is the best, or what suspension settings are ideal. A lot of that is known. There's a bit less enthusiasm about it. Less development. You see a lot of the newer owners and people on there asking about intakes for example. The same thing happened in large on NASIOC. Everyone started replying "use the search function, it's been covered a thousand times". It turns new people off and they don't stick around. Forums start become a plethora of knowledge to search on and less of a place to come as questions. Just my 2 cents.

Try looking up a specific DIY on Facebook. More fails than passes.
Don't see that changing drastically. Even the AIs need to have a reference somewhere before they pull it out their A.

I just think it has finally happened.
All the stupid no longer uses forums majorly. They've all gone to FB groups. People that actually want to learn stay on forums. The rest go to FB groups. |
