Finally got around to setting up my Ender 3 for Nylon 12 CF, first two thirds of the hood vent printed successfully so far.

Didn’t know an Ender 3 got hot enough for nylon. Looks great.

It just barely can do regular nylon, but I wanted a hardened nozzle for CF filament and those require a good deal more heat so it turned into a bunch of work. New motherboard (which made the printer nearly silent as a nice side effect) and custom firmware to drive the extruder at higher temps, a better heatbreak to not melt the bowden tubing, etc etc.

I went through and essentially rebuilt the entire printer and it's printing as well as my Method printers for a whole lot less money and a larger print area.

Still more hassle than the Methods, haha.

I converted mine to direct extruder, but haven't done anything with it in a while. It is nice they are pretty upgradeable.

Finished up printing my hood vent design in Nylon 12 CF, came out great! I need to bond the three pieces together and cut a hole in my hood now, haha. Chief inspector, Shelby, approved.

Installed my hood vent, I'll link the STLs below. I'm going to update to make sure they're NASA legal (3/8" proud of the hood is their limit) and fix the slight modeling error that lifted the rear corners ~1mm from the hood surface. Feel free to grab them whenever, I'll make an "OLD" folder when I update so it will be obvious.

If folks are interested in purchasing, I'll probably make a few in ASA and I'm going to work on a rain guard design too now that I have it on the car and know it's about perfect.

I'll grab one. Not 100% "done" there, I want to glue it up like Toyota did:

edit: added my own terrible pictures

I do not own a 3d printer, but had a friend print something out of TPU for me.

We went with 0.033" thickness.

Been in and driven in coming since Monday.

How do you like the PEI plate? I read good things but I've only been printing PLA+ on the standard cool plate with glue. Is it true you don't need glue with the PEI?

He said that he didn't use glue for the TPU, but does for anything else on the plate.

I would never put glue on the textured plate, and I've printed PLA, PETG, ABS, and ASA on it with great success. According to Bambu they recommend glue for TPU, PC, and PA.

I also have the Wham Bam PEI plate and the Cool/Engineer plate from Bambu.

I'm not a fan of the cool plate: I just hate using glue. Same with the Engineer plate. Used them both a couple times, then never again.

The Wham Bam plate is awesome - basically like the textured plate but smooth. I get great adhesion with everything I print and if it cools completely before I get to it the parts have usually completely released.

I'm going to be doing some PC fairly soon, and according to Wham Bam that'll need glue but I've also read some people saying they don't use it and it works fine. I might test that before I commit to a big print.
