Just finished my successful second smog. My engine is all stock so there was no issues there. Simply flashing to OEM, installing my OEM header and drove a tank of gas through it to get the emissions sensors back up to speed.

I called these guys since I was passing through and the booked me up for $40. They were pretty stringent on the visual. Mirrors and flashlights all over the engine and under the car.

Two years ago I did these guys and they were also $40 and much less stringent on the visual.

Moved out here and have to smog now. No worries, I've not fucked with any drivetrain stuff.

Except that the first owner apparently (maybe) tuned the fucking thing and I never knew about it. Throwing some weird codes when they hook up to the machine. Obviously bogus codes because the car would not be running, much less well, with the codes it throws.

Dealer may be able to flash to stock without being a pain in the ass, idk, melody Toyota seemed to not have their head up ass. If you can diy the cheapest is to get a tactrix cable.

The percentage is not really in the conversation. The fact that CO2 levels have doubled over a few generations is what is concerning, and what is also concerning is the net effect of all greenhouse gas emissions.

A lethal dose of ricin is 22 micrograms per kilogram, or 2200 micrograms for a 100kg person, or 2.2 milligrams. 100 kilograms is 100,000 grams is 100,000,000 milligrams, so 2.2 milligrams represents 0.0000022% of a 100kg person's bodyweight, yet it is lethal, which tells us that the percentage of something really doesn't mean anything on its own. Double the water content on your body quickly, and you will die, but the planet isn't dying with double the water, so we can't really tease out what is good or bad from percentages alone.

There is also a difference between having to replace equipment that is new and still good and having to buy new equipment with cleaner equipment when the old equipment reaches the end of its service life. Mandates have often been in place for a long time with known timelines, but some people have not replace equipment in timely ways in order to maximize short term profits over long term stability, or because they want to delay the inevitable in hopes a different candidate changes the mandates in their favor.

Back from dealer. The original dealer-installed aftermarket alarm (but another far away dealer, so there's 0 accountability) was causing significant undervolting. It has been removed. So now I have no alarm. Great.

Out $625 too. Fucking hell. At least I should be able to get the fucking thing passed and registered now.

My understanding is the FR-S didn't get those.

My 13 had a factory immobilizer system where it had to do a handshake with the key before it would start the car. Can always test what's there by locking the car with the windows down and then reaching inside and manually unlocking and then pulling on door handle. Alarm (honking) should sound, IIRC.

Nada.

Ugh. I'm gonna have to get an alarm. I strongly dislike not having one.

Huh, interesting. Maybe I botched the steps to get it to sound.

Regardless, if you like having one then you're going to want something nicer/fancier than the whatever the OEM-level one is anyway. I understand they've gotten pretty advanced.

Do you have a local shop you trust to do the install?

What you state is the factory immobilizer that’s been standard for decades, is standard on all 86’s. However there is no alarm if someone tries to break in or steal the car by towing it.

Interesting. I thought it would do that loud honking thing like it does if you hold down the panic button on the key fob.
