Dumb luck, following the service guide we figured the maf throttle body and vvt sensors weren’t getting 12v power when they should - this was by following the codes I listed in the other post. Efi relay and the rest of the steps checked good but we were getting weird continuity errors, pins connecting when they shouldn’t (at least if my rudimentary electrician skills are worth anything). Pulled the intake off to see if there was any crushed harness which freed up the main plug so we could look into it. As I tried to probe the 12v pin on the main connector I noticed it was running away from me lol and then saw the bent pin.

Pushed the 12v in so it was seated and bent the pin back, put it back together and voila. Glad I didn’t have to cut open or buy a harness. Only lost a cup of gas or so lol. And honestly plugging into the obd2 port and paying attention, the maf had zero voltage, when the car is on you should be getting a minimum 0.127V, that’s the main tip we had a wiring issue and the solution wasn’t new sensors.

Starting an engine that had oil completely drained sounds nasty as fuck btw.

My hallways are fine, my hotdogs were the issue. But it’s worth noting that these things aren’t really meant to be repeatedly taken apart and put back together (which is really true of all cases these days) and I’m with him, I have little desire to be a repeat Subaru owner and I’m glad I can fix stuff on my own.

Next fun car is planned to be a Porsche.

Remember when I asked you about compression? Test also gets oil circulating at nice low speed. It's nice to crank the engine for a bit with the plugs out. Might as well check compression too.

The no start condition means plenty of pumping without spark, about as much as a compression check, didn’t really help.

Working on Porsche's is a bit different than Subarus. With Subarus, you're hands get dirty and you often experience frustration. With Porsche's you're on a first name basis with your mechanic, may even become part of the family.

As I learned working on spaceships - still just nuts and bolts.

The past year of fa20 problems means I’m now comfortable pulling the engine, at least with the Porsche I don’t have to buy a hoist lol. A lift in the garage may be on the wishlist though…

Buying a car is only half of the financial equation. Maintaining the vehicle is the other half. Expect that to more than double what it takes to maintain an 86.
