This is what you said. "Yet the J02 recall was done entirely voluntarily after very, very, few failures and it is the same manufacturer that we are currently talking about" Seemed like your are comparing the issues, so I dug into it. Pretty simple bud. |

So just for fun I sent my dealer an email regarding pulling the pan for the first oil change, the mention of "oil pan seals" is very interesting. As well as needing to pull the engine to replace the strainer vs just cleaning it out.
"The oil change interval for the complimentary maintenance is scheduled at either 6 months or 6,000 miles (whichever comes first). I am showing that this should be due on March 03, 2023 if that is the case. Also, we would be more than happy to remove the oil pan during the oil change. But there are some issues I would like you to be aware of: The first issue is that the oil pan seals are not currently available. We looked up the part numbers and they show Backorder with no E.T.A. as of today. I would definitely avoid pulling the pan off until those seals were in stock and readily available. The second issue would be that it is not something that Subaru would cover under warranty unless there was a specific failure. If we were to remove the oil pan and found nothing wrong, they would not pay for the labor or parts needed for this. The cost would be $734.00 to do this. If we did pull it off and found something wrong or any excess RTV inside, then it would become a warranty issue and it would be covered entirely. My shop foreman informed me that if it were the case, we would need to actually remove the entire engine out of the vehicle to replace the strainer and the other items needed for this. In that case, I would just advise you to be prepared for the vehicle to be down for several days."

That's good to see. I just thought it was interesting they said "oil pan seals" are on backorder........when it uses RTV to seal.

I would not risk having them pull the pan and re-seal it if that's what they know about these engines.

But pulling the engine out instead of just cleaning out the pickup was the bizarre thing to me.

I could see an inexperienced service advisor mentioning seals, and just not know there are no traditional seals, but going a step further in stock and delivery of said seal, is just odd. |

Is there a reason this can't be expected with a scope through the oil drain, or am I missing something completely obvious? (I haven't looked at this at all, it just occurred to me).

There are 2 rubber o-ring seals on the oil pan that are also supposed to be replaced each time the pan is removed, this is likely what they were referring to. Interesting to see that some on this forum don't know this but are pulling pans....

and those parts were out of stock, didn't bother checking to see if they're in stock just now. That said, I see no reason they can't be reused, they weren't deformed or smashed on my car.
