While we are on the topic, how much oil would you guys suspect would actually be too much and cause harm? It's my understanding that too much oil can

- increase oil pressure
- cause air pockets (failed lubrication)
- froth up

starting to get into a guessing game.

i wouldn't worry about it unless it's frothy on the dipstick.

I believe you'd have to overfill by an entire quart to begin seeing those things happening.

And FIY Hole to hole on a dip stock is 1 quart for every car I've seen.

You need a lot more oil than you have for that.
If you were so overfull that it causes an issue you would know by now.

Put your dipstick in, pull it out, and wipe it about 50-100 times.

Pretty sure it is more than that, I know guys that intentionally run a quart high. There is the oil pan, the upper oil pan, and then the outside of the crank is about an inch above that.

As long as the crankshaft isn't hitting the oil in the pan you're ok.

Why would you want to intentionally run a quart high?

Oil pools in the heads when cornering. Another quart is insurance against starvation.

You'll be fine.

This is another good argument for a quick drain valve though. Slight overfill? Easy to drain a little without a full change.

Oil starvation. I don't do this, I just know of others that swear by it.
