I doubt this will happen, and if it does, it will likely be more or less a placebo. Even the Toyota patent you reference seems to just be "faking" gear changes.

I understand some people are MT or die, and I get that and if that's what is wanted, and there is enough market for it I hope it happens for those that want it.

I would think though that ones that want it, would want it to actually do something and not simulate something.

I think it'll be just like those old arcade racer setups (daytona USA or Ridge RAcer) or like those gamer setups at home.

Pedals + shifter attachment to the chair, steering wheel attached to the desk and you can play gran turismo or Forza like a real racecar driver including real shifting and pedal modulation action!

It'll feel exactly like playing a video game rather than driving an actual car.

I don't really see the point of adding a mechanical clutch and shifter. For the most part it only helps in the top end, maybe increasing your top speed a bit. Just adding it for the sake of "engagement" doesn't really advance the tech at all.

1. Great point on the Tesla charging stations - I think it's a huge step in the right direction since they are 150/250 kW depending on the generation, so they're pretty speedy.

2. Adding a mechanical manual trans & clutch to an EV does not make any engineering sense - it's purely an emotional decision. Any increases in efficiency from being able to optimize gear ratios would likely be offset by the additional weight, but whatever - it's more fun! It is not "simulating" shifts - you are very much still driving a manual car, just without the idle! I've ridden in an EV-swapped Karmann Ghia, and it is truly sublime. You don't need to clutch out from a stop, but you should definitely still use clutch between gears. If the electric motor's redline mimics that of the ICE it replaces, your shift points don't even need to change that much; you just need to optimize for the electric motor's powerband. But you will definitely want a more robust clutch - aforementioned Karmann Ghia blew its first (stock) clutch into a million pieces a few miles into its maiden voyage because of all the torque! It now has a competition-spec clutch and has been going without a problem. Here - watch this for more details:

One last point: a super-easy way into auditory feedback in a manual EV is to just switch the motor/trans mounts to polyurethane or solid metal, to transmit more whine into the cabin.

More good charging news thanks to Federal funds. Not only is Tesla getting ready to open up charging in the US to all vehicles, but GM/evGo and Pilot/Flying J are installing 2,000 charging units at the 500 outlets along the Interstate Highways.

Dude assumes a lot. 18 wheelers could do battery swapping and have the batteries charge slower and at night and not need fast charging. Lithium sulfur and sodium sulfur batteries could dramatically change EV potential, including cost, longevity, performance, material ecology and sustainability, cut weight by a third or triple range, etc. To think things will stay at the current standard is silly.

Oil isn’t renewable, so it isn’t sustainable. It is also better to drive an EV with today’s batteries on coal electricity than a similar ICE, and all that only improves with renewables and lithium/sodium sulfur batteries or whatever they come up with. Oil is also more volatile than electricity. Lithium, sodium and sulfur will need to ramp up, as demand will likely spike and so will costs, but the long term is a more stable product. Recycling will definitely ramp as well. The best recycling is reuse for things like grid storage or to those who require less range, but recycling will be huge, as it is already progressing.

The best thing he said was recognizing that housing is a big part of the solution. We need more multifamily homes and less urban sprawl for sure.
