replaced the door stops and it's a lot better. the ones i took off the car were greased but the new ones were dry. do these really need to be greased? if so i would guess just any grease will do?

A light coat of a lithium grease would be best. Don't get carried away to the point it pick up and holds contaminates though. It sucks when you get sand in your lube!
