Probably not moving fast enough to create a noticeable effect. Think about it, if they worked, they would be prevalent. Every hot boi track rat would have one. I can count, with no appendages, how many I have seen on any type of car that wasn’t a show car/hard parker.

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/wha...-do-they-work/ But, "ram air" systems made up of long lengths of tubing with multiple bends and elbows that eventually get air to the manifold are really nothing more than very pretty cold air intakes. There is little to no ram effect on that air by the time it makes it all the way up and through all that plumbing and a filter.

This is for a pro stock car. “The amount of pressurization produced by a hood scoop varies as a function of the square of the speed of the vehicle. The formula for calculating pressure is: 0.0000176 x air speed in mph² = ram pressure increase in pounds per square inch (psi). “If you plug in the numbers, you’ll find an increase in inlet air pressure of .142 psi at 90 miles-per-hour. Standard atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi, so this represents an increase of just under 1 percent. If the air/fuel ratio is adjusted to compensate for the increased pressure, there should be a corresponding 1-percent increase in horsepower. For a 1,200-horsepower Pro Stock engine, that’s a gain of 12 horsepower. Hood scoop pressurization increases dramatically at faster speeds: It’s 2 percent at approximately 130 miles-per-hour, and 3 percent at 158 miles-per-hour. At the magical 200 mile-per-hour mark, the theoretical pressure increase is .704 psi, or 4.8 percent. That equals 56 “free” horsepower.

It's probably not as functional as a custom long-tube cold air intake, but (believe it or not) life isn't all about horsepower gains. Some people just want to buy really nice, high-quality parts for their car, regardless of whether their impact is marginal. I'm sure this offers an improvement over the stock system (their S2000 intake was one of the better off-the-shelf options in terms of performance), and it's a really nice part. In terms of prevalence, the cost rules out seeing these in every other BRZ/GR86 track car over something less expensive with higher performance. It seems like common sense that, in general, 99.9% of people who buy a $30k car are not in the market for a cold air intake that costs close to 6% of what they paid for their cars. It's even less likely that the people you are referring to (hot boi track rats?) would spend $1700-ish on a moderately-effective intake over, say tires and brake pads. Again, this is just common sense, but I understand that some people need help connecting the dots. If someone has the disposable income to be able to justify buying one of these, I wouldn't blame them for doing so. Just because you are unable to do so does not make this a bad or ineffective part. |

You can get more than 1whp by only driving your car on low humidity days!

And in that case (1whp) I would call it "statistical noise."

Don't give a flying fuck on how people spend their money but let's not pretend it actually gives you anything even measurable in performance. Posers will pose!
