Keep in mind, next gen cards are rumored to pull almost twice the power of the current gen cards. I'm honestly not interested in a GPU over 250W, it's just not practical. My 3800x+RTX2080S heats the room up plenty as is.

Get that performance/watt up and I'll be paying attention again.

Rough idea of what I'm looking at for a new PC. Price doesn't include the graphics card. I'd probably want to wait until I can get a 3080 for less than 800. I'll consider any suggested alternatives, upgrades, and downgrades.

You set on Nvidia and Intel? Not that either are an issue, you won't specifically save amd vs Intel though you could, random sales etc. And with amd about to change socket... On the other hand, do you expect to upgrade memory or cou down the road?
Radeon graphics, the 6800xt seems back in your price range and worth look as a result.
Case might be snug with a top mounted rad... And front mount will hurt video card airflow. It'll work, but something to think about. I went from a Phanteks p400a to p500a and it's definitely bigger but the extra space is so nice even air cooled. Either likely alternatives if the fractal is hard to find when you buy.
I've lost faith in Corsair PSUs...forget why. Seasonic Ti 80+ in my latest.

Not sure how long you keep your computers but you should at least check your CPU for Windows 11 compatibility if you haven't already. Windows 10 support expires in 2025. Also, memory is so cheap consider 64 GB. With 64GB my machine never swaps out to hard drive and my fans almost never kick on.

Completely jealous, and in case you are wondering it takes 6.5 of them to make a full circle, which leaves just enough space for an entry point.

CPU: I've always gone intel, so just sticking with what I know. Also, 12th Gen Intel CPUs are interesting and seem to be benchmark better than the equivalent AMD if I understand the tiers right.

GPU: Sticking with what I am used to here as well, and 3080 is pretty awesome. I don't think AMD has an equivalent match in terms of performance right now.

Case: Yeah, I was wondering if it would fit in the compact version. I'm sure there's some way to find out before buying, there is a larger version of that case, but it's more expensive than I'm willing to spend on a case lol. This one is already on the high side (but does come with 3 fans) so anything equivalent at a lower price would be worth a look. It's just there are so many cases to look through lol.

PSU: I've never had a problem with Corsair, but this psu does run on the expensive side. It supposedly has some fancy hardware inside that results in more stable power.

I've heard that folks are uncomfortable with w11 but I'll look into it. Apparently intel recommends W11 for the 12th gen because it splits load better.

64 GB is definitely not necessary. At one point my work ordered the wrong laptop spec and a few of us ended up with 48 GB. I could definitely see the benefit of more than 32 for development work so I bought 64 for my last build. I am finding that as I get older ambient noise is irritating so the quieter the build the better.

CPUs are give and take on perf, but either way you'll be good. The Intel setup is a slightly more forward-looking package, though if you're just going DDR4 I wonder if you'll be getting enough out of it.


GPU, on the other hand... unless you're trying to do (still not really good enough even on the 3080) ray tracing, the 6800XT is a close match (give or take) - especially comparing the founders. Otherwise I'd not have suggested it. And for the price, it has the edge at the moment. Obviously your call in the end.

Case, the 500a I have cost me less than the current price on Amazon, but 3x140mm front, 2x140mm top and a few inches space above the motherboard so lots of room for a radiator both places. If you don't have a reason for a compact build, do yourself the favor of a bigger case. It's $159.xx for the black one with 3 good fans right now.



Your PSU choice is not exactly on the expensive side for a gold 850W... and yes, Corsairs good PSUs used to be Seasonics... Not sure exactly where they are now; still good for sure so don't sweat it.




Other thing to consider - if you already have a Windows 10 machine and don't plant to keep it running as-is, you can probably clone from the old system to new (note, it's some work if you need to switch to UEFI from legacy boot mode, and hopefully you're not 32bit on it...) and not have to reinstall software... or re-license, which saves you a bit. My current gaming rig is the third set of hardware I've run w/o a reinstall, and I did make the change from MBR to GPT as well as to UEFI with only a little bit of misery.

As long as your motherboard has UEFI and TPM 2.0 you should be fine with Windows 11. Those are the only sticking points I've found. I run W11 Pro on my AMD Ryzen 3900X rig at home and W11 Enterprise on my primary work computer (a SurfaceBook 2) with zero issues.

My home computer has been running it since first open beta, my work laptop for about 6 months (my desktop OS team had to sanitize it for work use first).

Of course your mileage may vary and I have a high tolerance for beta hell pain (I've run beta MS OS since DOS 3.0) but honestly W11 on both devices was no worse than a feature pack install. Frankly I sometimes forget I'm running W11 because once you left justify the task bar you can't really tell the difference unless you REALLY look for it.
