Regarding the hill start for how long should it keep the car stationary and does it start working on certain inclines? I am concerned because my driveway got a bit of an incline, not too much but enough for car to start rolling back. And when I stop in front of my garage and try to drive in, I release the brake and it instantly starts rolling back so I need to be really quick. I am just concerned is this how its supposed to be or mine is not working (even though the dash shows that it is on). I live in a pretty flat area so theres not many hills here for me to try it out, I might go look for incline to really test it, but I am wondering whats other peoples experience with this feature |

It’s fine, and very unintrusive. It won’t do anything on very small grades. When it does engage it only holds the car until it starts moving, you don’t feel it ‘pulling’ on the brakes. I honestly only turned it off because the light is always on. If the light was only on when the system was actively holding, I’d have left it. |

Why not use the hand brake? It's a technique that's required to pass the driver's test in a lot of Europe and the reason Ford Sprinter vans come with a hand brake instead of the foot parking brake Econolines used to have.

I had that issue in my ND Miata a lot, so far no issues in the BRZ. It feels "right"

No issues for me, but my Mk6 GTI had hill hold as did my BMW and I didn't have an issue in those cars. It wasn't defeatable in those vehicles, so it's been 10 years since I've driven a manual car where I'd have to actually play the clutch to not roll back when starting on a hill. Pretty sure I'd embarrass myself on a really steep hill.

I am familiar with starting on inclines using a handbrake, used it couple of times on parking spots with an incline |

I might re-enable it. This particular spot where I'm having to ride the clutch a bit is a short driveway with a hedge blocking my view, particularly of the sidewalk. So it's stop and go and slow. I've just never had a clutch stink that bad in 35 years of driving manuals, including my last 86. Anyhooo...

It allows you to not slip the clutch as much, so less wear. Also, it's just easier and smoother. I use it anytime the incline is enough that I'd have to do a little extra clutch slipping to prevent rollback.

I've never had a clutch get hot enough to smell. If I were you I'd be pretty concerned about the amount of wear happening. Then again, I keep clutches for the life of the car. Other people consider them wear items and replace as needed.
