2013 Turbo FR-S Valve Spring Recall
So, I have a 2013 FR-S that I just purchased with around 80k miles. It looks like it had around 75k miles when the Valve Spring recall was issued. I don't have time nor do I really trust the dealership to do this, since they have to pull the engine and it has an aftermarket turbo kit on it. I expect to put ~1-2k more miles on it before I can replace the valve springs myself this Summer. Do I have a ticking time bomb that will blow before I can get it done this summer, or should I be fine risking it? If so, what's the worst damage that can happen to my engine if the valve-springs do fail? Since it's an H-4, the valves wouldn't drop in the cylinder, would they? As I said, I just bought this car, and I don't want it to grenade within the first few months.

Don’t get it done unless your state requires it for registration

I've heard there have been issues with it getting done improperly, is this why you're saying not to? Or is it for other reasons? I'm also wondering if I could get it done at a Subaru dealership rather than a Toyota, since they have better experience with these engines, but I'm not sure if I can get it warrantied there.

Subaru will not honor a Toyota Warranty. I have a 2013 FRS with the recall. It has 74k with no issues. Synthetic changes every 5k. Recently started using 5w30. I have no intention on doing it.

Just don't do it.
If the springs lasted 80K miles, then they'll probably last another 150K. |

You know you were one of the outliers and were thoroughly fkd over. But there are also a large number of people who had their engines borked and Toyota/Subaru fixed the car for free. To OP The only reason to do the recall is if it is required by your state. It's hit or miss if you do the recall. However if the car is still running then why risk it. IIRC nobody has reported a failure due to the springs on a car that did not do the recall. |

But what you said was if it goes you are boned and "they'll destroy the engine and there is no recourse". (As I bolded to point you that exact comment) Which is 100% BS as I stated. |

And to add insult to injury the moronic tech that did the work didn’t tighten down the clutch fork properly and while trying to nurse a car home with a knocking rod, the clutch went out in the middle of the freeway in heavy traffic. So yes some of these guys at the dealers can be pretty bad. |

Have anyone actually had an issue with the valve springs? My car (a year before i bought it) got a new bottom end from Toyota after the recall "fix" that led to bearing issues.
