TIL cutting a round part in half with some precision is difficult.

It's even tougher with more precision.

What's that saying about how every thousandth, cost a thousand or something, something.

What sucks is it is a stamped wheel half. So there is no center to mark and it is formed with multiple steps and the measurement I think they messed up is down where my calipers don't reach and I don't have a set of inside spring calipers. So cutting it in half was the easiest solution I had to get it done.

It's damn near impossible with a hole already in the center. Gotta do what you gotta do.

I couldn’t sleep with those numbers and bought an inside spring caliper to verify. I did get close but I should have just waited and used the right tool for the job.

I just got the radius and used my caliper as a gauge to mark center on the outer lip. It worked okay for a rough estimate.

Working on opening tooling with new vendor for this stamped rim half. Going over manufacturing drawings which ended up not being right.

You could just put it in a vise and measure from one side of it, assuming you confirm the sides of the vise are parallel.

@NoHaveMSG easiest way I know to mark the center line of a circle....

Take a board (or cardboard, or whatever) and make a straight line down the middle. Then from the bottom of the line, form a V with two boards at a 45 degree angle from the base of the line. Now slide whatever you want to mark into the V and follow the line.

You can also cut the line through the board, turn it over and make the mark that way, or use the jig and the line to cut the object.

It also has the advantage of working for any size object that fits in the V.

Amazon sells something similar that uses a ruler but I like mine better because I can make it any size I want.

I have a similar jig I made for a table saw that lets me cut half circles if needed, and works for cutting wood for picture frames (45 degree angles). Saw this a 100 years ago in one of the woodworking mags.

lol, i would've just chop-sawed it in half.

the lug nut holes are centered, so i'd just mark across the lug holes, and chop saw those. instant direct center.

Remember when a hundred years ago meant 19th century?
That's a neat trick. Thx!
