Not sure if this is port-of-entry dependent, but the cars coming into my dealership (Port of Richmond, CA?) already have tooling marks for drilling the US license plate holes. In that case I don't know if there is really any benefit to using the JDM holes with an adapter kit.

The pilot marks are impossible to see unless you are looking for them. Drilling holes that aren’t needed is still a shame IMO.

Same with my car here in Ontario, Canada (port of entry -> Vancouver). It's lame but still better than having four holes.

Here is an untouched front plate from the factory. The pin holes are for the US market.

Yeah, that's what I saw on both cars at the dealership. I guess from farther away you can't see them, but they are pretty hard to miss standing in front of the car. For those of us living in states that require a front plate, there just doesn't seem to be a reason to get something like the tow hook plate holder or the JDM adapter. The prior generation car didn't have the recessed area built into the nose, so the tow hook option made more sense.

Thanks for confirming that it is a factory decision.

I still went the tow-hook mounting method because it looks better. So sure, I have the shelf area. But I hate the "buck-toothed" look with the plate mounted in the middle of the bumper and air-dam. I'll eventually get paint patched plugs for the JDM holes.

The rear bumper doesn't come drilled from the factory, my salesman was nice enough to let me drill it instead of them.

Is that kit from a Gen 1? Was going to go get the tow hook off my husbands 1st gen to check it was the same before ordering kit since I like the offset look better too.

It was a Gen 1 kit, specifically PTuning's kit. They have a hinge that allows rotation to conform with the bumper angle. Any kit that does not have that hinge likely wont work.
