You do realize that by using a larger outer diameter tire to shrink the fender gap you also lose suspension bump travel? While making the ground clearance higher.

How are you losing bump travel with a larger diameter tire? Trying to wrap my head around this

As you compress the suspension with an increasing force, either it eventually hits and squishes a bump stop, or the tire hits the fender liner, or metal.

The geometry of a properly designed suspension should make it impossible to hit the fender liner or metal. But that also means that the larger the tire, less suspension travel should be allowed.

Oh yes, that makes sense. I thought you were referring to it affecting bump stop travel. Thank you for your clarification.

It is not necessary that you lose bump travel if you go with a bigger tire. It could work with a bigger inner liner well clearance, but I saw now that rear wheel clearance in new one is even worse.

Yeah, more inner clearance would be very much appreciated for many reasons, but given it's a small car with a McPherson strut front, and the rear tires are close to the rear seats, I can imagine there are non-trivial packaging issues.
Even then, 1st gen cars fit 245/40R17 tires much more easily than ND Miatas, for example.

I have a 2017 86 and a turbo kit in my basement waiting to get installed, but really trying to decide if I should just trade in and get the brz.

Do what your heart says. There is no right or wrong answer. I have a SCd gen 1 and am not going to swap. You will definitely have more power and torque compared to an NA 2.4.
Very few will have traded in or trialed the new car to compare.

I'd say trade in or test drive the new one before boosting the 2017.A new car will be more reliable than a boosted n/a and you may find the powe rmore than enough for 1-2 years from now.Then, if it is not enough,boost the 2022
