The FA20/24 isn’t much different. It was meant to rev the nuts off.

Yeah, I'm hearing you. I'm not so sure if Subaru and Honda share the same philosophy in terms of getting the most HP/torque out of their engines, or not ( in terms of how their VVT works). Possibly Mitsubishi is sort of similar to Honda. I know Toyota leans closer to getting the most MPG out of the engine primarily, secondarily is HP/torque. BMW seems to be more so HP/torque focus , MPG secondarily. Every manufacture has a different set of goals /objectives in regards to VVT.

Its a little different in that the old VTEC motors had 2 camshaft profiles which switched between each other when you hit a specific RPM. It gave the motor a jekyl & hyde characteristic. Below that RPM switchover, the car wouldnt feel any different than any other econobox with low torque and low horsepower.
Above that RPM switchover you got a mini turbo-like kick that gave you an immediate 30 or so HP boost, which pulled strong to redline.
It was the same with the Toyota 2ZZ motor.

I believe these were just a way to get big power out of small displacement motors.

I dont think any other motor uses a 2 camshaft profile system anymore, and with the progress of the VVT-i system the power delivery has become alot more linear instead of the on/off feeling of those aformentioned motors.
Plus with trying to meet a price/performance/fuel economy balance, its hard to justify utilizing those systems. Once you hit "vtec yo" the motor will be chugging air/gas like a larger engine. Heck a turbo gives you a similar sensation, but with more kick and more power.

I think the FA20 feels somewhat similar only because the torque dip drops the power right before it gets back to normal at 5000ish rpm, in which case you then feel a gradual increase of power until redline.

But in both cases you have to rev the everliving shit out of the motors to get power.

For me, I enjoy the high revving nature of such motors.

Exactly. In fact S2K's engine is more driver friendly with the two profile cams. If you swapped the cams in a 86/BRZ and you were lucky to not have a ticking bomb, then you would realise you have a breathless engine in city driving. People complaining in general that S2K is not a daily driver's car they wouldn't appreciate a Boxster either.

The S2K is pretty gutless below 6K. Boxster is a much more low-rev friendly car.

Yes, but only to a degree.
