Interesting. I wouldn't call any of those options especially easy for the average buyer, and I could see some difficulty convincing a dealer to "disable" something unless Toyota makes it pretty clear it's not an issue (even something so small).

If it's in the owner's manual, they will disable if you ask them.
If Toyota service declines, a Subaru service will do it.
They might ask you to pay for it though.

EVs are superior in almost every way. If you want a last hurrah, an F-Type is gonna be a lot more of a blast and a lot more of a keeper than a new twin, unless you do track days. For track days, a twin.

The truth is, I'm having a hard time justifying buying anything at this point. We both work from home, permanently, and it hasn't been a problem just sharing one car.

Hard to justify dropping $50k on a car that will be driven a few thousand miles per year.

It’s a want not a need clearly. Not trying to talk you into it, because the market is nuts now. Justifying spending on wants is always hard, if you really want it and the experience brings you happiness, then the money is meaningless. Or just look at the 50k in the bank, if that makes you happy.

We only have four cars. We do now work out of the home again, though, and have to drive kids. We're finally putting some miles on again.

Serious question. Which is better? A 1974 Carrera RSR, or a couple year old GT3? I know which one I would rather own.

Better is not the same thing as which you would rather own though. I'd have to drive them as I've never driven either.

That said, the 74 RSR is a COMPLETELY different car than a 991 GT3. If you asked about a late 964 vs 993 or a 996 vs 997.1, that would be a more apt comparison. We're talking about a car that is almost the same, we could call this 2022 a heavy facelift if you go by other manufacturer's standards. BMW and Porsche both love introducing new engines in a facelift.

I know, that's what makes it hard. I've been a huge car guy all my life. There are pictures of me wiping down my dad's racecar when I was, 6 maybe?

But I also like all the spare cash vs when I had a track car and two different daily drivers. It allows me to do random stuff like, "Oh Jim Jefferies will be here this weekend, I'll get us tickets and make a reservation at a nice place."

IE, not a big deal to randomly drop $400-500 without needing to budget for it.

We don't have kids. So that's not a concern. I am thinking about trading our one car in on a new truck and getting a travel trailer, so we can be out of the house for big stretches and still work.

I bought a truck, thinking we'd get a travel trailer, but we never did get one. If I ever do go that route again, I'll buy a small box truck, like an Isuzu NPR, and convert the back stealth. It can park anywhere in a city business district and go unnoticed.

Story time:

All the van talk reminds me of a guy I knew. We called him Parking Lot Mike. He worked at a grocery store for about 30 years when he got the shaft in a divorce, and had two kids to put thru college. In order to afford 2 college educations on a grocery clerk salary, he sold everything he had and bought a conversation van. One of those with a bed, sink, and stove burner, and tall so you could stand in it. He got a post office box, a cheap gym membership to shower and shave, would hang out at bars and pizza places where he could nurse a couple beers and watch the games, and lived in parking lots. I thought it was quite creative.
