I prefer the new style, the door panel looks cleaner to me.

I know it's very weird, but that grab-handle in the gen-1 is so, *right*. As I think about it, my '71 240Z had it on the driver's side but *not* on the passenger's side. S2000 had it. To me, the scooped-out recess in the horizontal arm-rest just seems so very 1970s Buick. Am I s'posed to work my left arm/wrist/hand into an awkward position to grab it? Or have to reach over with my right hand? It's just, *WRONG*! Current design is *so* ergonomically correct for me. I honestly don't know if I can give it up...

Huh. My BMW is the opposite. The passenger side has a vertical handle, but the driver’s side has a horizontal pocket.

Yes I think it’s an E90 specific quirk.

The grab handle form Gen1 is nice, but it gets in the way when I'm reaching for the window lift switches. Also, with it out of the way in Gen2, you can fit a larger bottle in the door's bottle holder. Gotta stay hydrated!

Test drive the Z when it drops. Subaru is getting very Civic-esque.

Its the same old story with a lot of carmakers. Subsequent generations of the same model are like the star trek movies, they alternate good to bad. Its like they intentionally F**( up the styling so the next gen looks better.

I feel like I’m missing something. If I went and sat in the driver’s seat of the new GR86, what part of the door would I reach out and interact with, in order to close it? What part of that door is meant to be touched/grabbed/pulled to close it from the inside?

The only supercharger I would trust in gen-1 is one with super low boost. Cosworth had a reliable one (0.5 bar of boost), but it is not available anymore. The gen-2 engine is not the same as the gen-1. Many people seem to think it is just a bigger yet identical engine. It could be better for boosting, but it could be worse. Time will tell ...

While we are griping about the interior, I am also not in love with the center console lid. I know the old one did not even have a lid on it, but I was able to get an aftermarket armrest that was pretty great. I can't do that this time.

pic of the old armrest:
The center console looks smaller too, since its pretty much the integrated cup holders and...thats it. In the first gen, even though its a big hole with 2 "mounting" points for the removable cup holder tray, whichever position you put that tray in theres still some small sizable spaces where you can put stuff in.

In the second gen you have to use the cup holders as storage or cup holders

I forget, did the 1st gens have cup holders in the doors? The second gen does.
