I agree with what people are telling you. I concept of, at 18 buying a brand new car, is something you should forget. Yes there is hype (and marketing) about the car, but don't let that distract you from the realities of life and money.
Get some money in the bank, buy an old cheap reliable car, and revisit the idea later in life. I am mad about cars, read car mags, TV etc all my life. However i am now 41 and this will be my first new car purchase, and only the 4th car i will have owned. And only after I paid off my residence in full, and started saving for the car.

And on that note, my first car was a 1980 two door Corolla, full of rust, BUT the most fun i have had driving. That thing took a lot of abuse, and spend a lot of time sideways on the dirt roads around Bathurst, just like the 86, had to rev it hard, and corner fast to keep the speed up.

Your choice of course, but trust us, it will be better in the long run if you don't go into debt for a car. Plus you will appreciate it a whole lot more down the track.

I know it sucks listening to old people give advice but all I can say is even old people were young once.

And I enjoyed flogging it's guts out. It turned into a lesson of not how fast I could go but how to conserve speed in the bends. Man i enjoyed driving that!! And that's the point. The driving part, not what I'm/you're driving. Along with others here I am suggesting getting something that you don't have to borrow for and enjoy driving what ever it is you buy. I appreciate that there are other factors to consider (price, fun factor, enjoyment, status ) but borrowing money for a depreciating asset is not good financial sense unless you are comfortable with the loss.

Story over. Will I get published?
Agreed, I've had mostly commodores but probably the most fun car I had was a 80's Astra. I used to totaly thrash that, I'm surprised it didn't blow up... And if it did it would have been no great loss. It had little power, didnt go fast but it was manual, revved hard and felt faster than it was.

Im old and work for a bank so my advice is not what you want when I say you should give it a miss this time around.

But I will tell you that I was suffering the same thing that you are back in 1989 as a 20 year old when the MX-5 came out. Here was this "drivers car" that was financially out of my realistic reach and I would have put myself in to debt to buy one.

Smarts won out and I continued to drive around in my XY Falcon. It was a really good financial decision.

Some 20-25 years later I am in a position to re live that feeling and it does feel good that I can afford to be what we now term an "early adopter".

So if you really shouldnt do it, dont. Wait a few years and grab one 2nd hand or do what I did and wait 20+ years for the next big thing.

Just wait for toyota to realise people want proper "cheap" sports cars and they release a proper successor to the supra... or wait for nissan to respond to the 86 and release a new silvia/180sx/skyline gts-t. Way I see it is the 86 was testing the waters and clearly the overwhelming response proves people are tired of the everyday A-B cars and want some excitement that many of the cars released during the 90's provided.

Hoping this turns out to be true. Should reduce my wait time by quite a bit.

Why not hold off, wait till you get your insurance quote, you be selling your car in two years when you cant afford to pay for insurance. I waited till I was 25 before I got my first WRX wow it was so cool back then and still is. before that I drove a Lancer MR

Obviously some people did well for themselves and could afford to own such a car and pay 3g a year on insurance for a WRX. I couldn't so I waited.
