I'll take a stab, as this is a complaint we've gotten once or twice at the dealership I work at and one of the guys suggested this (not really a solution but at least an explanation) I've was told this mysterious mark left in the snow can be from the exhaust components. Something to do with heat in the pipes, the type of metals used in the heat shielding, and the salt/snow getting mixed in with that. Particularly the catalyst heat shields. Made sense in the case I saw personally, we were able to trace it to that location of exhaust in question.
