I like the interior, cup holders are fine because I drive with 2 hands on the steering wheel.
I dislike the exterior, alot. That front guard and sill looks like some 16 yrar old put a wide body kit on it. I would be kicking and scratching that sill everytime me or the Mrs got in or out. Gen1 was clean with no boy racer crap, this thing looks like a Honda and a twin had sex and this came out, if I squint it's ok, with my glasses on it's a hard pass. Bugger, I was looking forward to buying another new 86, a big part of car ownership for me is just looking at the car, that was why I sold my 2015 STI, it looked like a Kia that was released after I got my STI, this would remind me of a Honda full of fake vents and wings, I would hate looking at it. Unless the Toyota doesn't have that fender and sill combo. Disclaimer: I'm 55 and am way past slow cars getting body kits to look fast, the car might be tight and handles great, but the boy racer look has lost me, I reckon alot of the older gen wgo buy these new will be turned of by the exterior, especially that sill. The King is dead, RIP Gen1 Meh

Someone who only has US$30K to spend instead of US$50K?
There will likely be a big price difference between these cars. Different segments. The 400Z is fighting the Supra and V8 pony cars now. The new twins are competing with the MX-5, Civic SI and Veloster N in the cheap fun segment. |

I really don't think the engine will be that bad. Intake, exhaust, headers and an E85 tune will more than likely make you a healthy 250whp. You can only reach those numbers on Gen 1 with FI.

Has anyone noticed the Brz is getting a part straight from Ferrari? I'm pretty sure that front lip came from the F12 Berlinetta parts bin!

People will be lucky to see 230whp with this engine with these mods. Don't misunderstand- I think that the difference in the delivery of the power is far more important, and I'm willing to bet this engine has a great deal more power under the curve than previous gen at any RPM. It'll be great for sure

i dislike the styling of each enough that assuming that someone was gifting me the choice for free, it would come down to driving dynamics.
but i wouldn't put my money towards either.

Let's not forget that Toyota may save us! The GT86/FRS was the best looking in my opinion.

The larger boost gauge is a vent gauge using aftermarket brackets.

I totally just found this old account to chime in on the hype/disappointment and say I'll probably order the first one that comes to my store. I'd much rather have a wing vs that duckbill, but the exterior didn't bother me after 5pm.
Couple of things I'm waiting on: Please god let there be some crazy colors. World Rally is a nice go-to, but I'm hoping for yellow and even the orange from the Crosstrek. How much will it cost? I can pretty much order a 2020 limited on the website for $32K and have the small stuff I want. (cargo mat, dim mirror, short throw). I'd hate to see this one jump much more past the $33-34K territory before I add in the junk. |

I suppose the question is how fast does this more rev up and how will this motor respond to mods. I'm sure E85 will liven it up even more because of the higher compression, and I wouldn't be surprise if the motor has more potential. I'm sure Subaru is holding back a little for a gen2 refresh down the road. If the reciprocating masses are terribly heavier because of the larger bore then it show rev well because of the same stroke. Old: ![]() ![]() New:
