I installed one and hate it. I ended up grabbing one of these:
https://www.camincstore.com/shop/universal-trunk-handle

I just installed it at the top of the plate (since we don't have holes in the bottom) and it works well without having to pull my hand out of the way of a closing trunk.

EDIT: You can just barely see it here.

Great if you want to slam your hand in the trunk. Would end up pulling it down and then pushing from above anyway.

When I had my car in to get the ceramic coating done the owner showed me two Mustangs that had the trunks scratched to heck. I never thought about it but yes, people sliding their hands up and then back down to shut a trunk can make a mess out of plastic or painted panels.
My '06 STi had an inside grab handle from the factory. I got used to using it quite quickly. Never injured myself once in 13 years of ownership.

I've always closed my trunk just touching the license plate.

I didn't want to touch the paint or push against the paint with the plate. I thought about a plate surround that has a handle at the bottom but...

The car comes with two round rubber/foam pads glued on the trunk under the bottom of the plate.

No quicker way to wear it out than by interacting with it all the time

Geeez how often do you people close your trunk? I was in and out of mine 4 times a day for 5 years. Either pushed on the spoiler or plate but had zero scratches in the paint and did not wear out the rubber pads.
The parts are not made out of sugar!

Sure. They will only last 35 years instead of 40. I'm sure the pads will still be there when the car is long dead.
