I know everyone keeps talking about the 2.4 but I wonder if the engine it's actually getting is the new 2.5 going into the crosstrek. It might make more sense to tune that engine for the 86, then take a boosted engine and remove the turbos, and tune it down.

I would much rather see an evolution of that than a revolution of design that would probably destroy all the things that made the previous model great. There is no changing the fact that sports cars are all "niche" models made for people who still enjoy driving. That market is continuing and will continue to shrink. The Eclipse is now a SUV. Now that is a revolution of the original design and purpose of the car.

For a car as great as the 86, evolution is enough.

I weep for what Mitsu did with the beloved Eclipse. The SUV named Eclipse is for name recognition only. What a shame.
And they also took the EVO in the wrong direction. The EVO X is a really cool car, and it’s fast. But it got too heavy and expensive.
It’s pretty clear that if you aren’t selling many vehicles, it’s almost impossible to keep niche cars alive. Ford has been able to continue making the Mustang better, same thing with Chevy and the Camaro and Corvette. But they sell millions of trucks and SUV’s.
Mitsubishi doesn’t have a chance to do that, unless they get financial backing from another company. Developing a good sports car is probably a lot more difficult than a basic crossover SUV.

Even then, Chevy is most likely going to kill off the Camaro (again). Ford is in the somewhat unique position where it's flag ship model (not counting the Ford GT) shares the same basic platform with it's "economy" mustang.

That only has like 185hp or something...

It'll be weaker, maybe more torquier sort of but would not be a racy engine whatsoever compared to the FA20.

But the only reason the FA24 has 260hp is because of the turbo. Without, it’s probably close to the same amount as the 2.5L

Lets throw some fuel into the fire:

The 2.5L Makes 206hp and 186 lb/ft of torque

Also need to point out that over the last twenty years even the mighty Mustang is down to a small fraction of the sales it used to have. We think of it as the mass market car but the last 10 years really shows that it is dwindling. There were years where Mustang sales alone were greater than all of Subarus models combined. People that once would have wanted a base Mustang are now opting for a crossover or SUV instead.

186lb/ft? That is a dead giveaway right there. I am convinced.

For sure.

Demographics are changing along with inflation and wage stagnation killing off a lot of multi-car families. In my circle of friends/acquaintances I'm the only person with both a "daily" and "fun car(s)" that isn't retired/empty nester.

The current 370Z hardly sucks. It’s a highly competent sportscar that provides the kind of power so many claim the 86 needs. In fact, if Toyota made an 86 with 330HP with OEM reliability at a US$30k price point, it would probably end up similar to the 370Z.

I have first hand experience as I recently swapped out from an 86 I owned for five years into a new 370Z. It’s a different style of sportscar, more refined, with far more grip and quicker obviously, but you do feel the extra weight and you don’t feel the road as much... mostly because the Z has a more refined suspension.

If the 400Z is what many suspect, an updated 370Z with the Q60 3.0TT engine, it will also be a highly competent sportscar. The platform being old, something forum jockeys love to complain about, is really neither here nor there, as long as it is still within modern weight ranges and is stiff enough... and the Z is. A 1500kg, 400HP 400Z will be neck and neck with the similarly heavy, similarly powerful A90 Supra. Way out of the 86’s performance or price class, so not really relevant in relation to the mkII 86.

Sure, for the crosstreck, but if they retuned it for the 86 it could get up to 210-220. The first engine in the first crosstrek was basically the FA without the Toyota fuel system....
