Theres alot of things in the current market going against it.

1.) The pandemic. Rich guys dont care. BUt they'll buy their 200,000 dollar bentley's instead. Rich enough people may be holding off purchasing a car in this class.
2.) The Lexus badge doesnt have the same cachet as say Porsche or Aston or MB S class. It doesnt have the handling chops as a porsche, it doesnt have the brand snobbery showoffiness of the Aston, it doesnt have the repuation of the S class.
3.) spec sheet war...it simply loses. It honestly doesnt matter since its just way too overkill nowadays but you end up paying the same money for less (so to speak).
4.) SUV's. This segment is a dying segment (like all cars) and its morons who like to buy SUV's fault because they think its better.

I do think most of it is fromt he Lexus badge itself. A stigma associated with "comfy, luxurious, but boring reliable old people cars" They need something LIKE the LC500, but at a lower price point. the new IS looks like a good start, but i wish they could have updated the interior more than they did.

These types of headlines aggravate me to no end. The buyer did not pay $2M for the car. He gave a $2M donation to a couple of charities, and in return got the car. He now gets a tax deduction of $2M - (list price of car), a lot of press and a lot of good will.

Mind you, I don't have an issue with the practice itself, it a great cause, just how its characterized. It's the "big money" equivalent of the "John Denver Collection CD & DVD" gift I would get for donating to my local PBS.

They do, but lease them for their trophy wives. There are a slew of low mileage off-lease coupes out there now. Wait a few years and the 'verts will follow the same price trajectory.

The LC500 looks good, but it is very much a subjective thing on whether someone wants to be seen in one like a person might have a limited wardrobe, even if they recognize other styles look good on other people. In general, I don't think this segment sells well. Like the Aston Martin convertible I drove, they aren't sports cars, but they are trying to be. They are fat grand touring sedans that look sporty. The M8, RS7, etc, are all not really huge sellers. Anyone looking for a car in that price segment will just buy an actual sports car or buy a cheaper large sedan.

I think the other problem is the engine needs to be revved out, but who is going to buy a LC500 and want to rev it out? People in this segment want low end torque, so a 4.0L V8 TT is better. The engine is essentially a Coyote engine.

Lexus spends a lot of time on details that most people may never notice. It's what makes a Lexus a Lexus, but it may hurt sales for any perspective buyer who has never owned a Lexus long term.

SUVs are better for most people. The tall, upright, seating position is easier for fat Americans to sit comfortably and get in and out of their vehicles. Large SUVs and luxury trucks are big status symbols. They are more expensive than their sedan counterparts, and they have a larger road presence. For most average people, they make sense because they do everything, so people don't need to rely on others or buy multiple vehicles like a small truck and sports car. I'm pretty sure they are safer too, or at least, that is another reason why people buy big SUVs.

Me too. Used prices have fallen off a cliff on them as lease returns pile up in the luxury class now.

In 10 years when we're lusting after the new autonomous Lexus DC 100 (for Direct Current 100kw solid state battery) pod, our old school LC 500 N/A V8 'vert will still turn heads and in 25 years they'll do well at Mecum.

Still surprised they couldn't make room for a retractable hardtop instead of a ragtop.

That is a pretty good price. Most of the LC500s in this area keep their value pretty well because there are so few.

They probably could, except it would automatically delete the rear seat and whatevers left of the trunk.
