Base version in Japan was mainly a bare bones car ready for modification. There wasn't any other particular reason for the open diff decision. Trust me, I have the open diff version

I didn't know about the McLarens, but I am not surprised either. Current tendency is to filter every single driver input by some type of electronic control system. So, an e-diff is the way to go with the best case scenario coupled to a very light biased LSD.

I'll just repeat, after driving my factory LSD-equipped 987.2 (with +20% stiffer springs, GT3 control arms for camber, on Yok A052 tires) back to back vs. a 981 S with a TON more power (with street/track coilovers, headers, GT3 throttlebody, tune, on RE71Rs) at both Watkins Glen and at New Hampshire, running time-trial class-winning times in both cars, IMO these cars on "street" tires and street/track suspension setups do not *need* a limited slip diff for track work, certainly not for street.

Serious track car on Hoosiers, I bet they do, but at that point you'd want something stronger than the factory optional unit.

Um, yeah, that guy's opinion is meaningless if he was running HPS pads, which driven hard will fade to nothing before completing a lap, and at *any* kind of pace there's no recovery short of pulling in and parking for 30 minutes or so.

He's comparing setups a year apart.

Honestly I expected the 981 with more power to suffer due to lack of LSD, but it didn't. It *could* be that it mighta had brake-simulated-lsd active tho, not sure...
Anyway was running 1:09s at Watkins Glen, 1:13s at NHMS, street Cayman on street tires.

In any case, if you get to the point that lsd is *needed*, the factory optional Porsche unit is probably not up to the task. It has next to no lockup on accel and experienced shop that sets a lot of these cars up says it's basically an open diff after a few events anyway...

Better to get an aftermarket unit IMO. I would not hold out for a 987/981 Cayman with the factory unit as they are super-rare and from all accounts don't do much anyway, and not for long...

Just curious is the GT4 LSD different, being a GT car? The GT4 would be a dream car of mine, not that I don’t love my BRZ.
