Garage
Once again I drag up an old thread.

Are the cam solenoid covers just really prone to rusting? I don't drive the car in winter at all. I avoid driving it if there's more than a 10% chance of rain for the day. It is garaged (though not climate controlled).

Last weekend I noticed my cam solenoid covers are pretty rusty (especially the lower ones), and my pulleys are getting crusty too. I do not remember ever seeing this last year. The only thing I can think is that when I washed it a month or so ago, I did a kind of crap job trying to dry the body quickly and get it back in the garage because the sun was beating down and causing water spots. This left some pooled water in the garage, that apparently didn't evaporate as quickly as usual (the sunny day was immediately followed by multiple rainy days).

Still, considering most cars are driven in the rain and sit outside in rain to some extent (ie, while the driver is at work), I feel this was pretty quick rusting??

Most stuff in the engine bay (and underbody) is still clean and rust free, and this came out of nowhere. I realize it's not totaled...but it still kind of bothered me. Guess I'll get some of these (somewhat pricy) covers. Or just remove them, sand them down and paint them...

First off - - I suspect you have been quarantined too damn long, snap out of it -

No, the covers on my 2013 FR-S are not rusted (or corroded) at all. It's a garaged, daily driven car in the PNW where it rains at least 3 times a day.

Yep, if you really have nothing better to do, you could take them off, clean them up and coat them with something.

If you do nothing, they will be just fine. I reckon it would take about 127 years for them to rust through.

They are uncoated steel exposed to heat and moisture. They will rust pretty easy. It is just on the surface and would take decades to reach a point where it would start to be an issue. Clean'em up and seal if it bothers you. It is a 7 year old car after all. If it was an 83 Dodge Omni it would probably have been a pile of rust coloured dust in the driveway after 7 years!
Don't listen to Hum! His had rust on them as well but it all shook off when he backed into a truck at high speed.

Your implication that it ever stops raining is misleading. We transition from full size rain drops, to mist and back to rain.

I spent a week there a couple of years ago and it didn't rain once.
