Mine only does it when the ac is on and when it does happen (every 15 seconds) I get a power hesitation.

Sounds like it may have came w a dud of a ac compressor. Sounds like the clutch is already giving out or something. I've heard of ac compressors making that sounds & usually that puts a Load on the motor, which obviously explains the power loss.

I'm 90% certain this is another di issue. The chirp seems to be coming from the engine compartment along with the crickets and is similar to the di "pulse" when idling. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just a noticeable thing. Most of these odd noises seem to be directly linked to the d4, and that's something very few of us are familiar with.

Here is a thread on the STI forums for the hiccup.

Here is a thread on idle dips as well FYI. Part of why I say this is normal, unless your car is violently shaking and throwing CEL's.

That's kind of a bummer if the idle vibrations and fluctuations are normal for boxer engines. I thought Subaru always bragged about how smooth and balanced their engines were.

An idle dip is not normal especially for a car that is stock and brand new.
2500kms with frequent rpm dip and now it stalls today. It's an AT.

The rough idle seems to be the most significant problem that I have run across on these boards. I'm surprised more people aren't trying to figure out this problem rather than trying to figure out how to stop their engine from sounding like a cricket.

Whether these two issues are related I have no idea, I am no mechanic. Is the reason for this issue not receiving as much coverage because not everyone is having this problem as opposed to the chirping of the engine? I'm curious because I am supposed to receive my BRZ next month and I hope this isn't something that is a preview of what's to come with the the car.

I am a little surprised new owners are being leniant about the small issues of these cars. There are chirp noises, rough idle, the other posts about bad syncros symptoms and the guy wondering about putting in better tranny fluid. Really quite unacceptable to have to do these resolutions on a new car.

I hope this idle problem doesn't turn into an epidemic where it could lead to engine damage. There were a few in automotive history. Not enough where that everyone gets it but always a possibility to make people stay away from it. I feel this issue is alarming enough for me to postpone on buying the vehicle.

What happened to the engineering team from Japan flying out to study this problem. Something with the VVTI?

As far as I am concerned the idle issue is a safety concern, regardless of what Toyota says.

They can go F themselves.

Having the engine die at an intersection can get you killed.

Go ahead and live with this crap, but if it ever dies at a light, I suggest you take it back to the dealer until it is 100% fixed.

Here's a video I took of my idle dip.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eda6OB66LkI"]2013 Scion FR-S Idle Issue - YouTube[/ame]

I noticed that it happened fairly consistently on the way into work and when I came to a stop at a red light coming into work. I decided to see if I can catch it on video. Well, I did. I'm going to show the video to my service department tomorrow and see what they say. I'll see if I can get a technician to drive with me tomorrow while I'm at work.

I am having the same idle issue as everyone else, it happens when I'm sitting at a light almost 90% of the time. I also started to hear the "chirp" today but it seemed to go away after about 10 minutes.

Hopefully there will be a solution to these issues soon!

Sorry to hear. Seems like yours is the first to stall from the idle dip problem.

I kinda expect more to follow.

There is an adage in automotive schools that goes "idling is the hardest thing for an engine to do".

Scary. Reminded me of my 1983 Toyota Crown when it had a stalling problem. The feeling of horror and my blood suddenly turning cold every time it dies on me

That dip does not look catastrophically bad to me. It appears that the ecu is "hunting" a little, but it's brief. If this is the way Toyota intended for the car to perform, then it's crappy car making, but not necessarily a problem.

Stalling is another issue. If you are experiencing any stalling, then I would consider that a problem.

Note: Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.
