I think your taking a simple concept and putting way too much thought into it. No offense, but I dont think this conversation is even worth continuing. Take what I said as you will, wasnt expecting to get into a moral debate.

Easy 1800 just for the quarter panel, add labor and everything onto that. You can imagine the horror on my face when I got the estimate from the body shop if I didn't want to go through insurance

My rear panel and rear bumper was quoted 2.9k.
Mercury covered it and bargained for 1.9k fix.

Sounds about right, car seems really fragile to me. Probably because I'm coming from a 6000lb truck

Not really, just sounds like typical (IMHO) inflated prices for doing minor body work that you seem to get these days.

My Chevy Astro got dinged by a 16 year old in a Denali when she decided she wanted to be in the same lane as me. She caught her front bumper in the rear wheel well of the Astro. It put 4 golf-ball type dimples in the rim around the fender of my car, barely visible. The estimate to fix from insurance was over $2000. (As an aside, it tore the entire front bumper cover off her SUV, which also removed one set of headlights. I'm sure her's was much more)

I took the check, put it in my car fund and the money was used to pay for the FR-S eventually.

That's what insurance is for. At this rate I just want my car back to the way it was before the other driver was a moron. It's only got 1700 miles on it. This is just nuts though.

This is but I could argue (but won't, I'll just state my opinion) that insurance is a primary driver behind these types repairs cost as much as they do. This is true in other segments as well.

In any case, OP, glad to hear its going to get fixed for you.
