Mine is ducted to the outside (through the roof). Yep, all the ducting is clear. I crack a kitchen window for makeup air.

When we did our kitchen remodel two years ago, I insisted the microwave NOT be over the stove for this very reason. We ducted the stove through an outside wall, out the garage, through a 6 inch duct. It works pretty well, but that isn't going to solve smell problems if you cook something particularly fragrant. That would require an industrial level fan and maybe a booth.

i usually come in after the homeowners pick a model that looks pretty. then i just follow the manual, which gives ducting and electrical requirements, as well as finished mounting heights and clearances to the range top.

the big models all require a 6" duct with as few bends as possible, and usually have a trigger output of some sort to go to a makeup air vent that's installed on the other side of the kitchen-- usually just a electrically powered 3-6" ducting shutter.

and then i tell them that they can't fit a 40" hood in a 36" space, they get angry that no one brought it up before, and i offer them my sawzall.

Yep, something like this, 24" whole house fan, installed in the ceiling or wall of the kitchen would take care of even burnt up food smells.

We have the one that my wife picked. It looks pretty. I'll have to either go through or remove the overhead cabinet. I'm hoping to keep the hood and light fixture because it's matchy-matchy.


I plan on being able to move a LOT of air with it wide open, enough to need an open window for full effect. I know that it will be loud because of the small cross sectional area.

To stay in line with the matchy-matchy thing and if that's an outside wall, you could mount a whole house fan in the space behind the cabinet doors, then just open the doors when it is turned on.

Right there with you. The basement stairwell is behind that wall. but I was thinking if I can't put a big squirrel cage in the attic right over the cabinet, it can always go inside it.

As a side light, we found that a drawer microwave by Sharp worked really well and at lower counter height my wife was happy. (read short)

My car won't start because the battery is dead. The news says 1/2" hail is falling just a few miles from my house. My window is open a bit because I opened the door. And, I can't find my battery charger right now...


On a positive note, I'm on day 12 of no smoking. I was actually able to get real sleep last night for the first time since I quit.

No microwave, no cabinet above it, allow plenty of space. If you can, 3" wider each side than the stove. Go to a specialty shop.

Old house had a 600cfm 30", was awesome till it started having issues. I could roast coffee inside. If we ever get back to normal and can again think of remodeling the kitchen... I can't wait. But need to...

do you have significant problems with spilling hot liquid with those? that's always been my biggest concern.

but i seem to be clumsier than most.
