lol coffee, I never understood the obsession with coffee. Caffeine pills/energy shots for energy, tea for sophisticated drink. I hate coffee, unless it's in the form of something like the bottled Starbucks Frappuccino stuff where there's more milk and sugar than coffee, then it's delicious.

This stuff: http://californiachai.com/

Is the bomb diggity. I know the guy who started the company under it's original name "SLO Chai" and I sort of know the new owner as well. He happens to run one of the coolest coffee shops in the area too. He'd give me free drinks for 20 minutes of piano playing in the shop. Made a good study break and money saver in one!

Btw, a quick google search actually finds that dark roast coffee is apparently better for people with sensitive stomachs. Go figure!
This.

I have acid reflux disease, and I switched to darker roasts a couple years back because I found out it would be easier on my stomach. I still have my 3-4 cups every morning.

Sounds like acid reflux. Caffeine relaxes the sphincter that separates the esophagus from the stomach (also tobacco, mints, licorice and some other things) The acid goes into the esophagus and burns the delicate tissue there. The first thing is to try and mediate the coffee with some cream. That will help coat the stomach. Secondly, finding a reduced acid coffee may help. That is mostly dependent on the variety of coffee. If that fails, it may help to try an proton pump inhibitor like ranitidin (over-the-counter). It reduces the acid level in your stomach. You must use it for several days to obtain a useful effect. It is not like Tums where you just take it as needed. If the discomfort continues, check with a doctor, it could be the early signs of something potentially serious. So, you probably won't need to give up coffee, but you do need to make some modifications.

I just want to add that the darker the coffee, the less caffeine it contains generally.
I worked for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters for quite a while (Now known as Keurig)

That's why it's easier on people who have a reactive stomach. Something like a breakfast blend will give you diarrhea, where something like "Red eyes black dragon" may not. This of course is only when comparing blends from the same brand, and is a general rule of thumb. Some places may add more caffeine content or have a higher/lower service portion. Most of it is that people "Wake up" after drinking a hot mug of barely tolerable shit water, it's not because of the caffeine..

Also, as a health care person, I will say that it helps to know that sometimes gastritis provoked by caffeine and other seemingly offensive substances is a sign of an underlying deficiency or an intolerance to something else. For example, do you put sugar into your coffee? Sugar is inflammatory as hell, and will definitely, in concert with caffeine, irritate the crap out of your gastric mucosa. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes gastritis as well. On top of that, caffeine leaches minerals like zinc and magnesium, to name just a couple, out of your body, all of which are important in proper functioning of bodily systems. I used to suffer from all kinds of gastritis multiple times a year. Bad acid reflux as well. I tested positive for H.pylori so I did a two week antibiotic therapy and while it did help, the gastritis inevitably came back (keep testing negative for HP after that so it's not due to a recurrence). SO I started supplementing with zinc, a proper high quality multivitamin, iron as well (as zinc competes for absorption and may cause iron deficiency), magnesium and a couple of other things and no trouble with the stomach since. I drink black coffee on an empty stomach with no problems. Even sugar doesn't bother me as much although I cut it out almost completely. So that's worth looking into
