Its funny when people think spacers are unsafe to drive on.

wow, are you mad? I'd torque anything having to do with wheels right away.

anyway, I ask because there is always tons of FUD going around when it comes to spacers

Well I've seen them fail, more than once. If they are torqued properly there is little risk, but you are adding an extra part to fail on a heavily stressed area. Would I run them on the street? Yup (and have)! Would I run them on the track? HELL NO!

I would trust a "slip-on" spacer with longer studs over a "bolt-on" spacer. The amount of material that the lugs (the ones bolting the spacer to the hub) are gripping on to is really thin, not to mention it's aluminum.

I always park far from the curb. ALWAYS made it a habit when I was driving my first car.

You open up to centering issues, clamping force issues, risk of low quality (not held to OE tolerances on surface smoothness/flatness), stress changes to hub area, not enough threads to secure wheel, failing wheel bearings...

But who cares, hellaflush is important yo!

Properly torqued they are not going to kill you, but the OP said himself he hasn't even used a torque wrench.

Quote:
As long as the wheel, hub, and spacer are stiff enough to prevent flexing and loss of clamp force, the cause of most wheel stud failures is under tightened lug nuts (not enough clamping force) or over tightened lug nuts (the stud has been stretched past it's elastic limit, so the clamping force goes away).
(3-10mm is still meh but whatever - you can't defend 25+mm spacers, plus he'll probably be tempted to put another spacer on the spacer!)

This seems ideal to me. The more spacers you add, the more lug nuts are in play to spread out the load. Five hardly seems sufficient per wheel. Three, four spacers per wheel and you're spreading the force across twenty or twenty-five lug nuts per wheel, so each one is under only a small amount of stress. Like lying down on a bed of densely-packed nails versus only a few nails. Plus you can then have those wheels as wide as you want for the flattest cornering stance.

What's the proper torquing on our wheels? I think the manual says 89 ft lbs, but I'd like confirmation on that.

I work at Discount Tire and we're not even allowed to work on the car if it has spacers. It's deemed unsafe.

FUD = Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt

ie people possibly spreading mis-information about the subject.

The problem is that nobody can come of a consesus about if (or what kind of) spacers are safe to run.
