I personally don't find it funny at all if someone decides to cheat me out of almost nearly a couple of grand.

First world problems or not bottom line is: Once you have signed the contract, you are entitled to get what you pay for no more and no less.

Check earlier posts - a member has estimated the cost RRP from Toyota for that one wheel with its alloy rim to be close to be about $2,000.

It is not entirely unbelievable if you consider that dealers charge $400 for a Sat Nav upgrade disc!

2k!! wtf??

tyre = $295 RRP
wheel = $300 - 400 max

Or you can buy one of the many many wheels that will be coming up for sale when everyone changes their wheels and get it for even less!

you can buy them! would be less than 2k, thats for 5 wheels!
put one in your boot, sell the others off one and a time to others that want a full size spare and reclaim your money sorted.

now, everyone stop whinging and harded the f**k up

The irony is that for the first time in a long time, people who have never purchased a Toyota, or even considered one, are buying one.

Now, Toyota could have thought "let's impress these new customers with our quality of service, customer care, product support, integrity etc., so that they'll want to buy another Toyota in the future".

But no, instead they are going "bugger them - we can sell more 86's than we can make, so let's nail the customer's nuts to the floor and squeeze even the contracted buyers for all they are worth".

Sure, people will still buy the 86, but instead of it being a good experience, they'll be hoping to never have anything to do with Toyota ever again.

Spectacularly short sighted of Toyota - this car has given them a shot at a whole new group of first time Toyota buyers, and instead Toyota are working hard to alienate their new-found customers.

I'll still buy GTS that is on order, when it eventually turns up, and I'll be wishing I had ordered the BRZ.

THIS - is it - I am a first time Toyota buyer with the purchase of the 86 GTS and the move of taking something out of the vehicle does not exactly encourage me to recommend Toyota to my friends and families, much less purchase other Toyota in the future.

It is not so much the issue of missing a spare wheel - but for those who think that we're making mountains out of mole hill - do consider those that use the car as a daily and a spare wheel is an absolute must for them.

How would you do it better?
You have an assembly plant working at capacity (100,000 per year) and global demand of 200,000 orders in the first year of production.
Discuss.

I think you've missed the point - has nothing to do with volume of production. It is about the integrity, or lack thereof, of a company trying to profiteer from customers who have a contract to purchase a vehicle. A reputable company would understand they have an obligation to supply what the contracted customers ordered.

I will be using my 86 as a daily driver, and my job requires me to drive alot, including some 2hr plus drives on country roads/highway.

I definitely need a spare tyre, because being stuck on a country road waiting for roadside assistance, sometimes with minimal cell service is not something i want to be doing.

So its just going to be a hassle to find someone selling their original wheels, and then purchase one, pick it up and most likely have to buy a new boot mat.

All of this after purchasing a brand new car, I'm not complaining about toyota deciding to change the car spec during production, but its just an added hassle not needed when buying a brand new car.

Personally, I'm glad for the lack of spare wheel, I'll sleep more comfortably in the back without that lump, and be glad when I fill the space with a subwoofer.

For trips up north WA I'll buy a cheap WRX space-saver.

I'm sure Toyota are not glad to piss off a segment of their customers, but they probably felt the need to cut costs for reasons we aren't privy to. I dont think they have any illusion of cultivating a new generation of brand loyal enthusiasts, because its pretty clear we will keep coming back as long as they are making the best/cheapest rear wheel drive sports car, and if someone else makes a better 86 no one is going to keep buying the Toyota 86 out of loyalty to Toyota I dont think?

I wonder how many people will really open up to Toyota through the 86. Blind Freddy can see it's just a rebadged Subaru. Time will tell how many are fooled by Tada San's little fairy tales.
