Oh, a more modern movie I discovered but never saw advertised (in the US at least) is 'Eye in the Sky'. Then again, I sometimes live under a rock so....

I second "The Kings Speech" and "3:10 to Yuma". Both great.

+1 for Pitch Black. The rest of the Rid**** movies were garbage in comparison.

Same for the original Alien movie.

And also the original Rambo.

They are (in order of being favourites):
Jesus Christ Superstar
Tommy
A Clockwork Orange

You can't get much different in themes.

So bad, but so good.
Looking back through the limited list I have posted and seeing the favourites of some of the guys that I know at least the age range here there is a discernible trend. In my particular case you will notice that the majority of my "must see" movies are from a very tight rage between 1969 and 1973.

This would put me between 10 and 14 years old. It is not coincidence that this is the age range where they say you develop the majority of the traits you will carry into adulthood.

It is likely that these movies are etched in or personality more for the impact they had on us developing than the actual quality and content of the film. Even at 50 years later I can tell you my life events surrounding my first viewing of each and every film I have listed here even though none of them were exciting or even eventful.

When I consider my later favourites (like Mad Max, Terminator or Aliens) I can say I love the movie but could not even remotely tell you about the first time I saw it. They are great movies but had zero impact on who I became since that was already established.

The same applies to the monster movies as you said. Although there is most certainly an element of nostalgia involved it could also be that there is a certain level of influence they had in your development as a person. It could be as simple as they contributed to your level of organization or scheduling to make sure you were there to watch them every Saturday. It could also be more complex and had an influence you will never be able to consciously identify.

The older movies that I mentioned most certainly had an effect on my childhood and future growth. People that did not grow up in the 50s to 70s may not understand just how real the threat of nuclear annihilation were back then. Movies such as Fail Safe, On The Beach and even Doctor Strangelove had a message that was real and important for the youth of those eras. We lived with the threat hovering overhead (to many of us very literally) every single day and these films really show the world in which our later selves were formed.

OK so that ended up being a lot longer than the "me too" I started to write. I have never researched the subject and may be full of shit but if there are any psychology students out there looking for a thesis, you are welcome.

Unfortunately the news reports of late seem to indicate it may actually be a documentary!
