Silly question about painting engine bay caps
So I've been wanting to paint the oil/brake fluid/coolant and windshield washer fluid caps. Obviously they'll need to be off for a few hours, which leaves them open to the elements. Any precautions to take here? Particularly concerned about the brake fluid

latex gloves and some rubber bands do alot in the way of giving peace of mind
if you are broke boy like me then just stuff a blue shop towel in them ( clean) and call it good. |

thank you. There is no danger of getting air into them or messing with the vacuum, regarding the brake fluid and coolant in particular?

I just covered the open things with painters tape. The only risk with having the caps off is contamination from something falling in
![]() Ignore the Grimmspeed pulley cover. I took it off after because it wouldn't fit right. Everything else is painted red with red plasti-dip |

thats not how the brake fluid or coolant works.
brake fluid is based on pressure, you dont want air bubbles in the line. keep the fluid open to air wouldnt introduce bubbles in an already bled system coolant has a natural high point in the system that allows hot air to expand and vent off to, thats how we get a coolant overflow. which should be outside the radiator. iw ouldnt worry about it and just glove it up |

If you are really being carful, rubber band a plastic bag over the brake reservoir.
Brake fluid is hydroscopic and a plastic bag will help to stop the fluid from absorbing water from the air. That is why there is no vent in the cap. Also be carful of the paint you pick as brake fluid will dissolve many paints if it comes in contact. |

I used plastic wrap from my kitchen to cover the reservoirs. I cleaned my caps with solvent several times, sprayed them with adhesion promoter, paint, then clear. They turned out nice.
