Two things, Tcoat, love the first vid of shifting. That was how we were thought on a four speed while racing as your hand position helped get the right gear. Not so good with a six speed.
Any time your are pushing the gear lever against resistance going into a gear you are wearing the syncros. Getting a rev match will reduce wear. It does not apply to racing as most parts are wear items and expected to be replaced. Side note: Complaining about stiff shifting while cold is like saying your steak is tough while eating it frozen. |

One of the vehicles I learned MT on was a 1952 International dump truck my dad had for a while. Too bad that cell phone videos didn't exist back then because 10 year old me trying to clutch and shift must have been hilarious to watch. I can still hear those poor gears screaming.

Welp, this is the type of truck I learnt how to shift a vehicle with rubber tires.
1941 Ford 2 ton truck, loaded with hay, going across a rough hay field made for some "interesting" shifts from this kid - ![]() humfrz |

So is this a thing with this tranny? I thought this was a similar Aisin tranny to the STI’s Aisin, just slightly less robust. Is 2nd gear grind a common occurrence?
Are they like that new or is it a degradation over time as the synchros wear? The times I’ve driven (mostly brand new) BRZs, I haven’t experienced any grind at all. |

I think it's a PEBCAC issue.

With my FR-S the 1-2 shift is the one I have to be extra careful about. Going into 1st can also be difficult. Once the car/transmission is warmed up most of those quirks go away. Many times going into 2nd I can feel the synchros through the shifter. Like actually feel them spinning. This car really connects you to the driving experience.

Make sure to take your foot completely off the throttle between shifts. In normal driving, I find that helps smooth out the shifts, especially 1-2.
For high RPM shifting at the track it's not a problem though, only normal driving.
