My understanding is the manual is off the table for this car. They're probably trying to keep the 86 the purist car. This is probably going to be marketed to people that want the supra looks at the lowest price, and don't mind giving up the performance to get it. That and the 10 people who will actually buy a new car to engine swap it.

You know as well as I that sports cars are an endangered species, and if we don't continue to buy and support them, we'll be talking about them in the past tense.
Somewhat agree, but mostly disagree here.

If there is a silver lining to this, it's that Toyota is now producing MKIV Supra parts again, which can only be a good thing. Even the TRD bodykit for that car was brought back.

However, the difference between the Supra and the 86 is that the latter was made as a standalone car despite its roots. If this were a standalone car, there probably would not have been as much outrage. @Dadhawk put it best - the Supra name carries too much weight and should have been reserved for a car Toyota made themselves, and if that meant no Supra, so be it.

I would even go as far as to say that the 86 is far more of a Toyota than the Supra (what part of the Supra, besides exterior, badging, and possibly suspension, is actually from Toyota, and why would Subaru sell a car that is RWD?). The point here is that the car that received the Supra nameplate is nothing more than a rebadged BMW with suspension tweaks, which gives off the impression that Toyota made little to no effort in bringing back the Supra.

I will say this - I have no opinion of the actual car itself, as I have never driven one. I don't feel I should be as quick to judge the car because of the nameplate it carries. Contrary to what most people think a Supra should be, it's not supposed to be a high-horsepower dyno breaking monster - it's supposed to be a GT car that drives really well and can go against the best of them in its class. This car performs just as well if not better than its predecessors - and even then, like the MKIV before it, is still capable of high horsepower (albeit not as high, but high enough).

This car has its place - it's just that Toyota deserves little, if any, credit for bringing this car to their lineup.

It will weigh a couple of hundred pounds less and still do 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. And it will cost thousands less. If you like the twisties, that's plenty of oomph for many including me.

It also leaves room for the FT86 to slot in.

Which is exactly what the guys on the Zupra forum are crying about

It’d be so lame if this is true. I really like the exclusivity of it... If they’re gonna come out with a cheaper option at least make it look different

Do you own an A90 Supra? I think people are not wanting the Supra to be more affordable and catering to the "Honda Civic/Kid crowd." Most of us worked super hard for our money and paid a ton for the A90..

Now, a cheaper A90 comes along and a bunch of kids buy it??? It also makes it less rare on the roadway.......

Anyways, just opinions here....

I agree. I waited a long time since my last sports car and don't want something that is more common because now the same body is being used in a cheaper model. I to, have worked hard for my money.

To put a BMW badge on the Supra costs 10 grand. But you do get a convertible out of it.

It is funny you said this because I was thinking something similar with the addition that BMW's are so similar looking from the 2 series up to the 6 series and from the bottom spec to the M spec that these statements are kinda funny.

The real truth to this is that the 4 cylinders modified crowd will be faster in their Supras than the 6 cylinder unmodified (old man elitist) crowd, which they hate.

But the other irony is that the Supra has always had a range of models, and it had this range in the MKV from the beginning (just not all over the world). Some have argued that the NA MKIV is analogous to the $50k MKV Supra, and that more premium/faster (M spec) models will come. This could be true, but I argued that the 4 cylinder is like the NA MKIV Supra, and it should exist alongside the top tier.

Even if the 4 cylinder Supra was $40k new and $25-30k used in a few years, I still don't know if I am in on the looks and package, especially if it stays auto.

Wow that’s so sad to read. Clearly buying just to show off pretty much. But they’ll get used to it I’m sure. It’s just like any of the trillions of V6 “muscle” cars.

Anyways, like stated in the first page, I’m sure there’s going to be a good amount of people modifying the lower trim Supras and why not. It’ll look good, cheaper, have good power still, handle well, and maybe more reliable Of course we won’t know till see it, but still interesting

It is the looks for me. I quite frankly prefer the aesthetics of the 86 much more than the Supra. It just looks......better.

Same, except I do like the side view proportions on a GT two seater. Our short stubby hood is great for visibility, but the cabin would be nice as a two seater and shifted to the rear.

Kinda silly though, as even with a 4 cyl I don’t see it dropping below 40K. I don’t know too many kids buying $40K cars. Having a unique/exclusive car is cool, but if it doesn’t sell, car companies will stop making them, which is not cool.
